Sassafras got a reaction from OneWritersSoul in Vets-Do you eat "back" the calories you burn through exercise?
I found this in an article called "8 Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight" on sparkpeople. I remembered this question and thought I'd post it here.
#1 You're eating back all the calories you burn.
When you work out, you're burning extra calories. That's why exercise is so important in the weight-loss equation. But a lot of people overestimate how much they burn—and even use the "I exercised today" excuse to later overeat, overdrink (think alcohol) or overindulge. How many times have you faced a food temptation and thought, "Well, I worked out today, so it's OK this time." Or even, "I'll have this now, but work out extra hard tomorrow to burn it off." If that sounds all-too-familiar, this is one major reason why you're not losing weight. For the exercise to help you lose, you can't re-eat all those extra calories you burned. And in most cases, we overestimate how many calories we actually burned and underestimate how many calories we're actually eating, which means using that 3-mile walk (240 calories burned) to justify that restaurant meal (1,000+ calories, anyone?) leaves you in a worse position than if you may realize: at a calorie surplus. The Takeaway: Exercise can help you lose when you're really using it to burn extra calories, not as a reason to eat more.

I am on MFP but, do not know how to connect with others? Sorry I am so challenged in this way, this is my only social media type interaction, here on VST. I have logged generally for 15 months....getting off track, I stepped back into logging.
Do I just type in your screen name? My hubby set up the account for me when he bought my iPad for my b-day, the day I was released from surgery Nov. 2011. My name is sandyd2011 on it.

johnlatte - log every day (6 months out). I tend to eat a lot of the same things, but don't mind sharing a pretty boring eating routine.

I'm coming up on 2 years post-op. I log pretty regularly. You can find me on MFP as EscapePod (without the underscore).

I don't know but that sounds like an amazing deal. He could potentially be doing crossfit by August, as you say. If he goes twice a week the classes will be used up in 2 months.
And yes, fueling our tiny sleeves for intense exercise is a challenge, but it's doable. Many people recommend some simple carbs right before a workout, but I prefer some fats like almonds. Afterward a good Protein shake helps the muscles recover from the workout.

Hello! When I started out I tried to research what my body and scars might end up looking like after surgery and there wasn't much out there. I promised myself I would post pics for other people researching these things...no matter how embarrassing lol I took pics from all angles (front, side, back) to give a full account. These pics are in no way flattering but... hey, I look pretty good with clothes on, so I'd take all this over being my former obese self any day lol
Heres my stats for reference: 5'2", 34 yrs old, current weight 152, starting weight 217, starting BMI 39, 8 months out from surgery, surgeon Dr Kelly, 5 scars total. I still have about 20-25 lbs to lose. My loose skin is the worst on my tummy and thighs. I had to take my bra off to show my 5th scar (but I tried to cover up the girls the best I could), so there are bra marks under my breasts and around my torso. Those are not scars. I know those familiar with the surgery would know that, but those just starting out might not.

The day you know it all....is the day you start regaining all the weight you've lost.
I read these posts by these vets that are 2 or 3 years out, they are still learning things all the time. Seems perfectly normal to still be a work in progress at the point you're at.
We all have triggers, and there's no telling what it's going to be for each of us.

How old are your tires? If over 5 years, or if they are showing signs of dry rot, then yes you need to replace all of them. Don't forget, that donut your riding on is only to get you to a safe place.

I've been a year at goal. In that year, I have fallen off the wagon, topped out at my new "allowable" top weight of 140 twice, spent a few weeks drinking too much (two, twice a week is now my limit) and faced the fact that I am still food obsessed and probably will be for the rest of my life. Heck, I quit smoking about 25 years ago and still, every once and a while, I really, really want one. I'm just that kind of girl.
Laura-Ven, as long as you get back on the wagon, falling off is no big deal. Even the most natural thin person eats something bad once in a while.
That's why we are vets: we've been in the war longer. Take that fatty food: Kapow!

Yes, that is well said. Post op is a very pliable situation and not a success or a failure (insert Yoda-ism here, lol). There is never failure until you give up and stop trying. Each meal, each day, each week, each month or even in some cases, each year, is an opportunity to reevaluate. It is a time to pause and take a roll of what is working and what is not working. And then make a small change. As long as you are goal driven, your subconscious mind has no choice but to align circumstances to help move you towards that goal.

Let the regain stories inform you, not scare you. Many of the people who have had regain are working on it, and learning from it... they and medical science will help to find answers.

Reading everyone's success stories here on VST always reinflates my tires. And if that doesn't work, reading the "regain" threads certainly does the trick.
