Great idea! I'm 29 years old, single, no sibs, and no kids. I have a degree in English Literature and another in the Baking and Pastry Arts. I decorate cakes for a living and love creating beautiful, edible, art. My deep down desire in life is to be a published author, to work with Canine Search and Rescue, and run the Tough Mudders race with my best friend. I recently decided that my life definitely needed a pick-me-up and so moved to a different state where I'm much happier! I adore running, martial arts, kickboxing, and am in a love-hate relationship with yoga. I have a cat who is super clingy and am thinking about getting a Shih-poo dog and naming him Ewok.
I just started the process for VSG and can't wait to kick some serious flab and become a lean, mean, running machine! My goal is that when I get under 200 lb I'm going to go zip lining!

You'll be fine. Typically you go into pre-op at least an hour before your surgery and I don't know about your hospital, but mine didn't allow anybody back there with me. It was there that I changed into the hospital gown and all my stuff went into a bag which was attached to the gurney (obviously don't bring jewelry or valuables). If they don't do that you could ask them to take it out to your husband. As for after surgery, frankly you're probably not going to care if he's there or not. It takes several hours for the anesthesia to wear off (you'll be in post-op for awhile while this happens before they take you to your room) and you're going to be on painkillers and thus probably sleeping or talking to imaginary people (apparently I totally did that). If you need anything thats what the nurses are for. Trust me, you'll be so irritated with them coming and checking your vitals every hour that you'll enjoy the peace and quiet to just sleep without feeling like you have to entertain someone! Good luck with your surgery!

I told some of my coworkers, but not all of them. When my weight loss became apparent I told them I had a 'lifestyle change'. That I cut out the carbs, sugar, fat, meat, etc and ate fish and lots of veggies and that I exercised a lot. The important thing is to not let people bully you into telling them. I've kept to my guns about my 'lifestyle change' (because it's actually the truth...more or less, ya know?) and eventually they stopped asking and I now just get a thumbs up when they see me.

While I don't normally advocate being rude, if you're coworkers are being intrusive a curt and cold, "It's none of your concern" or "I don't care to discuss my personal life at work" and immediately walking away would get your point across. They may still watch you, but they probably wont say anything to you for awhile. I dislike being questioned as well and when some of my coworkers got too nosy about why I was having surgery I told them I had been infected with spider-alien love spore and needed to have it removed before I did my best Sigourney Weaver in Aliens 3 impression. That pretty much shut them up. Good luck and your hubby sounds like a sweet guy! Clueless, maybe, but sweet

I'm sorry that you're having a hard time right now! I do know that if you go to the forum home on this website that there is a recipe sharing section. Also, I googled some possible recipe/low-carb smoothie websites for you and came up with the links below. I can't guarantee their quality for you but it'll give you a jumping off point for research. Also, you can try going to barnes and noble or Amazon for vsg recipe books.
Another thing is look for support groups in your area. I know that there is one where I live where you do not have to actually be affiliated with a specific doctor in order to go. You can try looking for something like that through your local hospital. Plus you can try googling to see if there are any nutritionists in your area that are experienced in VSG surgery diets.
Good luck and I hope this helped!

Ok. This was awesome! My husband has a habit of walking past me and smacking me a good one on the butt. Usually too hard and I have to whine at him. So tonight, I was wearing a pair of jeans I haven't worn in years. I was showing him the pants and I said "go ahead! Smack it!" He said Nooooo, it's too small and delicate, I might break it!
HAAA!!!! He called my butt small and delicate!! He's never said anything on me was small OR delicate! (It's not really small by many definitions, but I guess compared to what he was USED to looking at....) YESSSS!!!!

Okay, first, take some Gas X and then some Milk of Magnesia. My doctor told me its not unusual for your BMs to go from regular to once every 3 or 4 days, so don't freak out. Take some pain killers and relax (I assumed you were prescribed some). You had major surgery not to long ago and your body is still healing, it'll be okay. As for moving too fast to the puree stage, think about it this way: it seems everybody here is on a different diet. Some people seem to move to full chewable foods while my doctor still has me sipping my food. There is some relative give and take in the diet. If you're super concerned call your doctor and check, but as long as you don't get a fever or start throwing up I think you'll be okay.

I am one week post-op tomorrow. I am lucky enough my mom (banded in 2009) is here until the weekend. She didn't think I should mow one week out so I made her dinner. Grilled handburgers and Mac and cheese. Didnt bother me at all to make it but she felt bad making me cook when I'm on purée food. Then as she ate half her burger and her Mac and cheese, I got full on just 2 tablespoons of my puréed Mac and cheese (mixed with Protein powder). Couldn't believe how little it takes to fill me up. As we cleaned up the leftovers we commented about how a few years ago we would have devoured the Mac and cheese. The little things make me happy.

I'm currently 4 days post-op and this has been one wild ride! Does anybody else have a problem knowing whether or not you're hungry? My stomach is making growling noises, but when I have one of my doctor approved 'meals' (ie- yogurt) my stomach revolts! It reminds me of a 2 year old who is stubbornly holding her mouth shut and refusing to eat! I feel like I should be making airplane noises with the spoon to tempt it....
Also, did anybody else find that sweet things like sugar/fat free pudding are now absolutely disgusting? I can literally feel my stomach twitching and contorting when I try and have some. Yeah, this should make my job rather interesting...(I'm a cake decorator).
So, do ya'll have any interesting food 'issues' now post surgery?

Lyra reacted to SKCUNNINGHAM in Nsv - I Got A Job! Multiple Offers!
Here's the background data. I took an early retirement package from my employer at the end of December of 2011. They were having some tough times financially and wanted to reduce costs - so when they offered the package, I accepted it. I took a gamble on myself and my skills being marketable in the bad economy.
Not a fun time to be in the job market. For those of you who haven't looked for a job recently - it is completely different than it was even two years ago. If you don't know how to use social media, have a great "content-rich" resume, and are willing to network almost continuously, you are going to have a difficult finding a new job. I am 55 years old, and am competing with "kids" half my age and willing to take less money than me for the very same job.
Here's the NSV - I received four job offers! The first was about 3 weeks ago, for a contract position - which I accepted. That seemed to bring all sorts of other good things my way. I received three additional job offers in the last ten days. All three of them were good offers for permanent positions (if any jobs these days are really "permanent"). I had the amazing task of deciding which one was the one I wanted - because I would have accepted any one of the three. I did a little negotiating with the companies - to maximize the offers - and picked the winner. I resigned from my contract job, accepted the job I decided on, and told the other two companies, "no thanks".
I think the fact that I had successfully lost 100+ pounds and am a "normal" weight both really helped me have a successfull job search. I believe the confidence boost I got from having beat my personal demon carried over into my interviews. I know people looked at me differently during the interview process at a size 12 petite than they would have at a size 26W. I didn't have to worry about hiring managers or human resource people worrying about the costs of insuring an obese person. I think I look younger than I did 100+ pounds ago - and younger is definately better in today's job market.
It is going to be nice at the new company to just be known as "Sharon - the new woman" rather than "Sharon - the fat woman who is new". I look forward to planning what I will be wearing the first week of work!

I'm going into day 3 of a 7 day liquid diet. Although my doc wants us to only have 20g of Protein a day, low sugar and low fat rather than just stick to Protein Drinks. So we can have clear broth, sugar/fat free pudding, fat free and no added sugar yogurt. Which really doesn't fill you up at all. Honestly, though, it's uncomfortable (I'm not gonna lie) but if you space your 'food' out evenly I've found that while you're hungry you're not "I will kill somebody if I don't eat a burger right now" hungry. It's not fun, but it's doable.

Yeah I had a couple of people like that where I work, too. I told them that I was either getting wings surgically attached so I could fly like a butterfly or that I had been infected with an alien and it had to be removed before I did a Sigourney Weaver from Aliens 3. My answers pretty much depended upon my mood but were all together silly. And you know what? The nosy people left me alone. Granted they might have edged away from me, but I'll take what I can get!

I had surgery on March 26. Everything has been going very well and I am down 21 lbs! The day I got home from the hospital I threw my scale out because I didn't want to become obsessed with it, so this was the first time I weighed myself since surgery. Woo hoo! After I got home I started trying on the 10 pairs of pants that are hanging in my closet that I have not worn in sooooo long. Happy to say a couple of them fit! Today I am wearing a pair of capris that I haven't worn for a couple of years, and am ok with showing some leg now!

I was a dessertoholic in my pre-sleeved life--waffles with Syrup for Breakfast, candy after lunch, dessert after dinner. My friends knew that my baked goods were great and looked forward to dessert at my house. There was always something sweet to eat in the fridge. Since my sleeve, I have ice cream here for guests (I don't eat it anymore as it makes me feel queasy post-sleeve) and I usually serve some kind of fruit after dinner. A friend came to dinner and brought a cake--a delicious strawberry-whipped cream cake--and I served her some and a tiny piece for me. I tried to make her take it home afterward, but she wouldn't, so I put it in the fridge. Before my sleeve that cake would have called to me everytime I was near the kitchen and would have been gone in two days. Today, a week later, I saw it on the back shelf and didn't know what it was for a moment...then I remembered. Pre-sleeve, I would have eaten it, stale or not. Today I was not tempted at all, just thought "Oh, I forgot about that" and tossed it in the garbage.
What have you tossed lately, pre-or post-sleeve, that you knew should leave the house?

You can always create an "Adventure List" with your kids and together ya'll can choose 10 'adventures' to go on with you as you lose weight. Fun, silly, or creative stuff that you may not be able to do easily now. That way she'll look at it not only as fun and something to look forward to, but it can also show her that change isn't scary and that good things can come from it. Write it up, decorate it with glitter/stickers/whatever and put it on the fridge so that they can see it every day.

I looked at the picture at least five times before I realized the skinny woman ruining my picture was ME! LOL.
