tkauhi got a reaction from nprcowboy in Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?
I have to say that I'm one who received NO instructions. I waited thinking I would be visited by a nut in the hospital but nothing. Before discharge I asked the surgeon about it and he said he didn't use them as it cut into his bottom line. I know what everyone is thinking and I've thought the same thoughts but I can say I was so desperate to have the surgery and he had good reviews that I just trusted him. I don't ask many if any questions on this forum for fear of being ridiculed but others who have had the guts to ask questions have helped me learn so much. I google a lot and have bought some books but you are right, there are some or maybe just me that had no nut instructions and no follow up (except for weigh ins) care. If I ask questions he will answer them otherwise he rushes me out the door. He had this same (RNY) surgery 9 years ago so I thought I was getting someone good and someone who understood what we go through. I messed up big time. I'm just on my own along with reading answers to questions asked on this forum, books and google...

    Hello all,
I haven't posted in a while because I've been really discouraged. I've been stuck for the last month and then gained 5 lbs to boot!!!
I finally lost the 5 lbs and this week I lost another 5 so things are looking up and since the scale is moving in the right direction I feel much better now. I'm so happy the rest of you are doing so well, it's encouraging to me to know I'll eventually get there.

I like to go to Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshall's. I got a $99 Vince Camuto skirt for $20. At Macy's on the clearance rack I got pair of Jones New York trousers originally $95 for all of $16. I love a deal.

People who don't struggle with weight, or those who are not in the right place to do something about it are not always the best support for us....even if it's good friends and/or family. I found more support and understanding on this forum than I ever thought possible and I am convinced that my success is in great measure also due to the wonderful people I've met here. Stick with us, and you'll get all the support you need.

Many people felt it was not the way to go....all I heard was "Diet and Exercise"....
The reason my PCP referred me was because I was "Dieting and Exercising" for over 35 years, and NOTHING worked...maybe for a short while, maybe 6 months, but then it all came back, and then some...a complete failure every time.
The best was from my cardiologist..(I have had a heart attack, angioplasty and stents).....anyway he was looking down writing notes when he asked..."Why do you need this clearance? What is the surgery?"
When I told him he looked up in shock, and said "YOU? Why not Diet and exercise?"
I could not go through with the explanation the 100th time, but he did clear me.
NOW, almost 4 years later....He cannot stop complimenting me...calls me phenomenal...a machine. Calls me HIS best success story for someone turning their life around after a cardiac episode(s)
I pass the annual stress tests like 1/2 the workout I do at the gym.....everyday..
I wonder if he realizes I'm the one who had THAT surgery?
I had the Lap Band...I don't care if it was the easy way out...it's all about me and I could not be happier...so what should I care about others thinking....You have to care of yourself...these critics aren't going to do it for you...if they can even do it for themselves....(Funny how the fat ones are the most critical...?)

The first month or so can be an extremely emotional time. Be careful not to get it stuck in your head that you have problems in your relationship popping up, and instead remind yourself (and your spouse!) that your emotions will be all over the place for awhile.
I would wait to re-analyze your relationship until you are at least six months out and your hormones have stabilized a bit. A lot of people talk about relationships getting weaker after surgery, but I am here to tell you that many of us have relationships that have strengthened and improved. Its important to remember that eating is a social activity, and a great deal of our relationships surround it. Remind yourself of the other things that attracted you to your partner and start devoting your time to those activities together from early on to replace the social eating.

I actually agree with you but it's not what you say it how you say it. "I would never put something like that in my tiny new tummy that I have spent so muvh money on and if you do maybe you were NOT ready for the surgery" vs "I don't think it is a good idea to eat pizza especially so early out. Try to focus on Protein so you can maximize your weight loss and take full advantage of your new tummy." Some people take every chance to belittle others and make it about them as if they never struggled with food issues and personally it's not helpful.

One of the things I wanted to do was build an underground storm shelter. Tornados hit us 6 years ago and did quite a bit of damage. Anyways being overweight and 65 years old, this wasn't going to happen. Well after surgery, I lost 110 pounds and started my project. During the last couple weeks, I had to move 40,000 pounds of gravel by hand. I took the task in stride and accomplished it. Its good to have my stamina back.

I'm christian and just had surgery a week ago. I have been thinking and praying for years about this. I most definitely know that the time was a God thing. It was his time and his hands. I have trusted in him to get me to this point and will continue to trust in Him all of my days.

I have talked about this issue many times and there seems to be many opinions about it. I feel you get more flies with honey and that driving your opinion home with a nine Iron can only hurt someone in the long run. That being said I also think that if you have an opinion you are welcome to it as it is a free country but I personally am not interested in hurting people, nor tickling ears. I am just interested in answering the questions the best way I know how. Through my own experience and what I have learned. The rest is up to the the readers to decide if what I say is valuable or not.
Following the forums rules is number one for me and the other is to teach and inform from my personal research and experience.
