Keto can be a great balance of meats, fats, non-starchy veg, the occasional berry, and full fat dairy.
The unfortunate side effect that I found out is that because of the high percentage of fat (true, real keto represents about 100+g of fat a day), I had terrible stomach issues and dumping syndrome. I think the SCIENCE behind keto speaks for itself, and there IS a LOT of science out there. Tons of research has been done regarding Keto and cancer, diabetes, inflammation etc.
I feel unfortunate that it's not an option for me, I have 2 non-WLS friends who have lost 75+ lbs each on it, and they eat a pretty nice balance of foods.

If one is severely limiting their intake of carbohydrates or fats (whichever fad one chooses to follow) they are severely limiting their nutritional potential. 20g or either doesn't leave much room for the Vitamins and minerals normally obtained from those skipped foods.
Fat burning usually starts 2-3 weeks after starting a major weight loss effort, and corresponds to when one's glycogen reserves are burned up and the body gets the idea that this caloric deficit thing is for real. Then it starts drawing from its fat reserves. This usually corresponds with the dreaded three (or third) week stall. As long as on continues a major caloric deficit, one will burn off the stored fat - whether one is on a low carb diet, high carb diet or whatever one chooses. There is a mythology promoted by some of the fad diet gurus that you need to "eat fat to burn fat", which is true to a certain extent - if one adopts a fat heavy diet, the body will adjust to metabolizing more fat, as we are an adaptable species, but if you want to burn off all that stored fat that we typically have here, it still takes a caloric deficit; otherwise all you are doing is just burning your intake and none of your stores - you can get all the "benefits" of ketosis - the bad breath and BO - without the weight loss.
If one does a more classical "balanced but less" diet, there is less chance of the nutritional deficiencies that are inherent in these fad diets. You can burn off the stored fat just as well, though the overall fat burn will be less as you are consuming less of it, but the overall diet will be healthier and more sustainable.
For the OP, CloudNL, another approach to consider is Dr. Matthew Weiner's veg first philosophy that he presents in several of his youtube videos, It is somewhat contrary to the classic "protein first" bariatric approach, but does have some merit, particularly for those of us many years out. I'm not real high on his lower Protein recommendations (which seem a bit scant for all except the shortest women) and I;m not so sure about his green smoothies, but as veg is inherently bulky and low calorie, it does make sense as the basis of a weight control diet/lifestyle. I follow something akin to it in that my diet is fairly high in fruits and veg, but doesn't eliminate Proteins, fats or starches - as they all have something to contribute to a healthy diet. It's worth considering if you are amenable to a higher plant based diet.
The other related concept, conveyed by one of the surgeons in my network, is to eat as close to dirt as possible - eat what grows in the dirt, or what eats what grows in the dirt, with as little processing and packaging in between as possible. This has a lot more merit for a long term sustainable lifestyle than any random macro counting/limiting diet.

Clinically, low carb/high fat diets such as Keto or the current interpretation of paleo are used for non-WLS gastrectomy patients who need to avoid weight loss and ultimately regain unwanted lost weight. You can figure out whether that is appropriate for your needs, but those who use these diets in weight loss attempts need to be vigilant with their calories.

My husband started the Keto DIET even went thru a girl that does a month of food to prepare for the week. He really didn' like it. He said that it all tasted the same and in 2 weeks he was out of there. But he did lose like 12#'s in a week. He has had WLS. I couldn't stand the smell. But that is just me. I really think that it will work. But just like everything else you need to work for it. Good Luck

I too have put on 8 pounds in past 6-8 months. I know what I've done and having a hard time stopping. I absolutely love the caramel frappes from Mc Donald's and StarBucks! I know they are wrong, I find I can't stop myself from getting them when I'm out and about. Specially with my daughter, she's hooked on them also.
My surgery was Oct 2014. I can't stomach the Unjury shakes either anymore. My husband said if I could smell them I would've never started drinking them. My nose stopped working 3 1/2 years ago for no reason at all. Doing pretty good with other junk food, chocolate of any kind in anything I can't eat.
I have to get strong and reject those nummy frappes, oh so hard.

Did you ever think, maybe it's time to give up the diet mentality? I have personally decided to let that all go and embraced Intuitive Eating, which finally gave me my health back and I have been able to maintain my weight well and no longer obsess about it all.

You say you are exhausted. Have you considered you are not giving your body enough fuel? No to mention the mental energy it requires to think about weight and constantly worry and judge yourself. When I dieted or restricted my food intake I was EXHAUSTED. all the time.

Because that lifestyle- it's tiring as hell.

I am starting to notice that every surgeon is different, its really weird. I have a plan that was given to me, including for maintenance. So I am about a cup and half of food total, that includes Protein and veggies/fruits. That's what I am supposed to eat, and if I eat protein first, its plenty. However, when eating carbs, I have found I can eat ALOT more than that, almost 2 and half cups or more!...hence why my surgeon was big proponent of not introducing carbs fully back into my meal plan even years later. If you read other post, you will see other Sleevers talk about how they have the ability to eat more carbs and sweets, but can barely finish a cup of chicken. It is interesting but true!

    Good Morning!
So I am 5 years post op, and over the course of the last two years or so, I have gained about 15lbs. I have been as low as 153, but was happy at 158lbs. Once I hit that goal, I kept working out, but started to not follow the diet my surgeon had directed. That's when the weight start creeping back on, and I found myself at 174. I will be honest, I actually do not have a problem being at this weight..but I have read so many horror stories about people who became comfortable and gained almost 50 plus pounds back, so I decided that for a week I would go back to the basics just to see if I could lose a few pounds. So, starting last Monday I went back to three meals day, with my portions at a cup and half. I ate Protein first, and stuck to veggies and fruits. Also, I cut all wine out of my diet except on Friday and Saturday, where I allowed myself to have a glass with dinner. This forced me to stick to a cup of coffee and all Water during the week. As usual, I kept up my 5 days in the gym, with 3 days of cardio and 2 days of weight training.
I will be honest, I felt great but it was HARD kicking the carbs to the side of the road.
I weighed myself on 3/26 and I was 174, I got on the scale on 4/3 and I was 169! I am so happy that I have shed these few pounds because it gave me more confidence that my pouch can still be used as tool, as long as I eat and drink what I am supposed to, and continue my workout regimen. Not sure if I will ever see 158 again since I weight train, but I do know that 174 is not a health weight for me, and that I need to eat better and take better care of myself. This surgery was an investment I made in myself, and I need to treat it as such.

OH DEAR LORD!! That apostrophe in the title is HORRIBLE!!! FIX THAT:

Veterans ONLY please. One year + post op.

Please respond to this thread ONLY if you are a year or more post op. Thank you for your consideration.

Many of us have expressed a desire to have a "safe place" for vets to discuss our progress, our maintenance plans, or just grumble in general. This forum is supposed to be that place, but it's quite often used as an "Ask A Vet" opportunity which is awesome, but sort of defeats the purpose.

@@Alex Brecher and I have been tossing around ideas on how to better suit the needs of us oldies but goodies.

We can restrict the forum by post number.

We can restrict it by time registered on this site.

We can restrict it by time post op.

It's MY opinion that post number isn't working. Time post op makes most sense, but people can easily lie. I truly think we can sniff those people out, so this is MY first choice. The third option also makes sense if we say they have to be here 18 months of so. That would give them 6 months of pre-op diet time and then a year post op. Of course, Alex can make exceptions on a case by case basis.

Please chime in with your opinions!!

If you don't like the idea of a Vet's Only Forum, that's OK, too. You don't have to utilize it, but you are more than welcome to.

I couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners at all postop. I just used real sugar, Monk Fruit, and honey. Also drank diluted fruit juices and regular sports drinks. Used regular Torani syrups to flavor plain Greek yogurt and Protein Shakes. None of this impeded my weight loss, but of course I wasn't going gangbusters on high calorie Starbucks drinks or fruit smoothies, either. Besides the real thing, I will use stevia when cooking, and some of my Protein supplements do contain stevia and/or erythritol.

I've been doing intermittent fasting. It has sped up my weight loss since I started. I do 16/8. My eating window is from 12pm-8pm. I still stay in a calorie deficit during my 8 hours. I had considered 5:2 at first but decided to try this first. I'm now 9lbs away from my lowest weight. 4 years post op sleeve

I totally disagree. I often look at someone's previous posts if I feel their words are interesting/out of left field/questionable/humorous/ very wise/etc -- ESPECIALLY if they are very new or have very few posts. Doing so gives me context on their mind set and experiences so I can more understand their point if view.
I personally think the words "bully", "manipulate", "shame" are being very much overused lately and do not apply here. In fact, I find their very use (along with the words dangerous and pathological) a bit manipulative/bullying in and of themselves.

I drink beer but I have to pour it in a glass to get some of the bubbles out. Wine and sweet drinks give me terrible heart burn that's actually debilitating it's so painful. I do drink Vodka with diet cranberry juice or light orange juice and I love a bloody mary.
I had my first drink at about 3 months out when I was on vacation with my family. My experience was that I got super drunk, super fast from one small drink. I also sobered up pretty quickly.

I have a beer or three once a week or so. No big deal.
