No, it's not just you. This time of year, it seems like everyone is battling some kind of cough, flu or strange virus. If you have recently undergone weight loss surgery or are several months post-op, don't let these winter bugs pull you off track. Here are the tricks and tips I offer to my own bariatric patients here in New Jersey to stay healthy.

Losing weight after bariatric surgery demands a lot from your body and mind. You are engaged in a completely new way of eating and daily living ─ it’s a big change. During this transformation, the last thing you want is to face a setback due to an acute illness such as flu, cold or other viral infection.
Being ‘under the weather’ can also derail whatever exercise program you are engaged in ─ and that’s not good either.
Those of us who work in hospitals know several tips and tricks to keep from getting sick by boosting our immune systems. I’d like to pass these ‘insider’ tools on to you:
Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, no matter what.

Find ways to help lessen stress and do them every day.

Stay hydrated; aim to drink 5 Water bottles daily.

Sweat it out. Keep moving and sweating at least 30 minutes daily.

Wash your hands for a full minute, all the time.

Eat foods rich in zinc, such as grass-fed beef, pumpkin seeds and spinach. Zinc stimulates your body to produce immune-boosting antibodies and overcome cold viruses.

Add Vitamin C-rich foods (I favor oranges and bell peppers) to your diet. Vitamin C stimulates the production of antibodies to help fight infections (and lessen cold symptoms such as a runny nose).

Super-charge your gut with healthy bacteria just by eating Greek yogurt.

Go ahead and eat the garlic ─ it’s a potent antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial weapon.

Germs and sicknesses, in varying degrees, are out there right now ─ but that doesn’t mean you have to fall victim to them. Living a healthy lifestyle every day makes serious chronic diseases and common seasonal bugs less likely to take hold of you.
Just like overcoming obesity, it’s another way to boost your quality of life, every single day.

My surgery is 2/25. I plan on writing notes to my family as well. I don't think there's anything strange about it.

With Chinese food you can always ask them to adjust stuff like no msg and no cornstarch (which they put in almost all their dishes) and get meat and veggie dishes which there are plenty of. Also you can try their steamed dishes where they will give you the sauce on the side and you control the amount you put in.

At first I thought my husband was being un-supportive, then I figured out he was scared for me. I found that by talking about it and educating him it got easier for him. I'm now 10 months out and he's amazed. Keep sharing information, but don't stop - this is for you, your heath, your life, your kids.

I did the same thing. My surgery was December 11 2011 and I gave those farewell letters to my sons for Christmas!
In Sept 2013, I wrote farewell letters before plastic surgery which i entrusted with a dear friend. She nervously dumped coffee all over them when I was in a long day of surgery - she told me she knew I was going to be fine since the letters were a gonner..haha
It is normal to be scared to death. It is almost all you can think about, but go in with confidence that you will be fine and have a trimmer, healthier YOU to look forward to!

Now I know we're supposed to be positive and the support here is awesome, but I wrote farewell letters to my two boys and my wife just in case ya' know? I know it's a safe procedure and I know the stats are in my favor but better safe than sorry I guess. Now I've seen some rough things in life and I've made some tough choices but that was probably the toughest thing I've ever had to do. I guess I'm trying to come to terms with my decision with my surgery which is rapidly approaching on the 17th or maybe it's my empty belly from the pre op diet talkin' . Just curious anyone else do this or am I just nuts? Thanks for listening friends.

I go in on the 17th as well, I have a husband and children too. I was told to start my liquid diet today... I am to lose 12-16 lbs it seems very impossible. I would say that you are not crazy for thinking that way and writing the letters to your family.

We risk our lives every day, so I just try to make sure all of my loved ones know how much they are loved all of the time. I always make sure that "I love you" are the last words I say to any of my family members on the phone or in person when we are parting so I can be confident that my last words to that person were "I love you". I can't tell you how much peace it has brought me knowing those were my last words to my grandparents, my sister-in-law, and my niece before I lost them.

No I haven't. You hear of soldiers doing it prior to going into war. I did four years in Iraq as a contractor and never thought about it. I did make a decision to not tell my family about the war raging around me. I always told them nothing was happening around me. They were happy with that until I came home and let them know the real stories. That's when I knew I made the right decision to keep them in the dark.
I guess I'm saying if you want to write a letter do it. I knew the risk going into the surgery but I didn't want to worry my family and I clearly informed them everything was going to be fine. I advice that to you.

Yep, you're crazy. Just kidding. I think it's normal. I heard 2 stats before my surgery that gave me some peace of mind.
First one was that someone's doctor told them that they have a greater chance of dying on the way to the hospital in a car accident than during surgery. Not sure if that is an official stat but it made me realize that I don't freak out every time I get behind the wheel of the car even though each time is technically a risk.
Second, my surgeon said that mortality rates for WLS were lower than knee surgery. That made me feel better too.
I hope this helped and if it didn't, just know that as soon as surgery is over, you won't be worried about it anymore. Hang in there!

You're having major surgery. It's always good to be prepared in case something happens. I didn't write letters, but made sure my living will and estate items were in order. I just made sure I told each and everyone I loved them before the surgery

OK, I'll admit it to all of you. I've had gastric sleeve weight loss surgery.
    There, I feel better.
I actually have opened many peoples' eyes to the benefits of the surgery: friends, co-workers, and family. Many people have misconceptions about the surgery (or confuse it with other WLS). I do explain the life-changes I made and that it'll be a lifelong process, but I think most everybody understands where I'm coming from even if the surgery isn't right for them.
Overall, if my telling one person motivates them to have the surgery and potentially saves their life...that's worth any bit of negativity (which I really haven't experienced much of) that I might endure.
And I'm not judging anyone here for their choice to tell or not. I wish you all the best of luck with your surgeries and continued success!

I don't know, but hang on. It gets better. I was like that 2 weeks into the surgery. I am on my 4th week and my spirits are much better. It all revolves around food. Whether you can eat ir or not.

Everyone gets the nerves, fears about losing out on the good times of eating whatever you want. It's normal and you will have those concerns until you wake up from surgery. Then, at least in my case, all those concerns are gone and I'm just thrilled at the success I'm seeing.
I was sleeved 11 days ago. My heaviest was 310, I lost 27 pounds pre op and in my 11 days post surgery I've lost another 17 pounds. To put that in perspective, in the last two months I've lost about the same weight as a medium sized dog. I would take that over cheesecake any day.
Also, once I really got going on the pre-op diet and especially the post op one, my focus on weightloss became so great that I am now actually getting as much or more happiness (in the way of pride) skipping calories then I ever did eating them.
I had that amusement park ride issue once too. So embarrassing right in from of the kid you want to be a hero to. Well, now you get a chance to be that hero. To show him how to accomplish a goal no matter what, to show him that you will be alive when he/she goes off to college, gets married etc. To have more energy to play baseball or scuba dive with the kid. I think all that makes nachos a little less important in the grand scheme.
Good luck, this has been one of the best decisions I've ever made, I hope you feel this way too one day soon.
