Please Help me. Food addiction. Binge eater. I probably should not have had surgery
In Australia this surgery is almost always done by private surgeons in private hospitals using private insurance. There is no reason to assume the OP was coerced or convinced into surgery. To the OP, please check out nedc.com.au and thebutterflyfoundation.org,au.

Artificial sweetners
Put it this way. I left my type 2 diabetes in the hospital. Eating this way has never caused a spike and my average blood sugar is astoundingly good, judging from the 3-monthly hemoglobin A1C. And I get 100 to 150 grams of carbs a day.

Dumping 101 & burping anyone?
Please do read the wiki on dumping. Lots of people use the term to refer to diarrhea but that is not accurate. They are not the same thing.

Artificial sweetners
If you want to know what effect any food has on your blood sugar, you can find out! Go get a blood glucose tester and some test strips. If you have a wal-mart around you in the US, they have their own brand that is cheap. Test yourself one hour and two hours after starting to eat. At one hour, your glucose will be as high as it is likely to get from the food, and at two hours it should have cleared your blood and you will be back at a baseline. Assuming you are not diabetic, a good baseline reading is anything below 85 mg/dl. Do the test with a piece of white bread so you can compare that with whatever food you want to test.

Do you guys mind if we merge this thread with the "official" one that is in the sticky posts?

That's a bit harsh. Let's try to be supportive when people ask for it.

Attention ! Australian Sleevers
Thanks it was a blast! All, I am cutting back the amount of time that I spend on this site. One of my goals for 2014 is to find balance in my life and that means spending less time in front of the computer. I am not quitting completely as i don't want to lose touch with you. If anyone wants to add me on Facebook please send me a PM with your name or email and I will add you. People say they have trouble finding me on Facebook.

Of course it is. It is extremely possible with every kind of bariatric surgery.

Vitamins and supplement calories -- 80 cals / day?
Why not just take Metamucil for your fiber or ask if you can add some dextrin (Benefiber) to your shakes? It goes clear. But you don't need to worry about 80 calories when you are probably having less than 400 total, I guess.

HAIR LOSS!
If you have already posted in a post and it gets moved, it is still in your list and you don't need to find it again. Just go to yiur "subscribed" content and it will be there. But I'm not moving this one because the OP didn't want me to.

What are your daily numbers?
I did 800 or less calories and at least 40 grams of Protein for the first 6 months. Now I am on 1200 or less and 60+ grams if protein. I usually get more like 80 grams now that I have added one Protein shake a day back in and usually have under 1000 calories and 200-500 calories exercise a day which I may eat some of or may not. I am considering starting to only track protein and just make sure I have some every meal. Tracking all my food actually makes it easier for me to choose carb-y Snacks because it is easier to look at it day by day rather than meal by meal. That means I will choose to gave some low-protein snacks because it all works out at the end of the day, but I'm not sure I'm doing myself any favors.

WATER AMOUNT
At 2.5 months out you don't need to worry about 4 ounces at a time. Drink as much as you can. If you drink too much you won't stretch your sleeve. It will just come back up. And you will remember the feeling for next time.
-
WATER AMOUNT
Sip sip sip. It will clear your stomach in 5-10 minutes. You should be taking a sip just about every minute at first. It is your full time job your first two weeks post-op. Try cold and warm and see which one your sleeve likes best. Watered down fruit juice, broth, and other beverages count as liquid too -- even your protein shakes.

QP Protein Packets
But the collagen part might as well not be there. If you can figure out how many grams to subtract for the collagen and gelatin I would be interested to see how many grams of usable protein it has. I bet you can get as much from a glass of milk.

Has Anybody Heard of This?
Actually the DS can be done laparoscopically and is routinely done that way now. There is a whole section of this site dedicated to the DS. You can basically think of it as a combination of VSG and RNY, or RNY with a sleeve rather than a pouch. The surgery used to be done in two stages but is now often done in a single surgery. The stand-alone VSG came about because the first stage of the DS worked so well on its own for many people. Here is the link to the DS forum: http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1018-duodenal-switch-surgery-forum-new/

2013 was a wonderful year! I want to make 2014 even better!
I totally understand and agree! We are at a similar point post-op and I keep having the same thoughts. I feel like I can actually succeed at whatever resolutions I make this time. I no longer feel like a failure with regard to keeping my promises to myself. Happy new year!

HAIR LOSS!
If I move it you will still be subscribed to it and will get notified when you get replies. But I can leave it where it is.

Welcome back. I am glad you have reached out. That is a great first step. First, it sounds like you know you have a problem with eating. I would encourage you to talk to a therapist about this. You can find therapists who specialize in all kinds of eating problems. Google for NEDA, National Eating Disorders Association. There is a directory of service providers there. If you are outside the US, let us know where you are so we can help you find a similar organization in your area. Second, about the mechanism of eating with the sleeve. The sleeve doesn't expire or stop working. You have asked for the "rules" and I will outline them for you. See the link in my signature to a list of all of the major post-sleeve diets I could find from various surgeons and hospitals. They go into details. But here are the rules: 1. Protein first, every time you eat. You want more than 60 grams a day. 2. Denser protein is better. Chew your protein as much as possible. You will feel your restriction and you will feel full longer. 3. After protein, vegetables are most important, then fruits, then other things only if you are on track with protein and gave room. 4. No drinking with your meal or for at least 30 minutes afterward. You might look for the Boot Camp diet which OregonDaisy posted. It is basically those rules. Good luck!

HAIR LOSS!
Is it ok for me to move this to a more appropriate place so you can get more answers? This part of the forum is about food and nutrition. You can also search the forums for "hair loss" as it is an extremely common topic.

Attention ! Australian Sleevers
I have thought that so many times lately!

Missing food right about now.
Just wanted to point out there are other easy and cheap meals you can make your kids that might not tempt you as much or wear you out to cook. Rotisserie chicken with green beans and potato salad on the side. Salad with prewashed greens and precooked chicken strips. Chicken and frozen veggies thrown into seasoned stock for a quick soup. Just some thoughts.

Guess what you can have your two favorite foods in the purée phase if you purée them. Beans are absolutely great to eat! On,ya three more days. Hang in there.

New whey protein shots
Don't go there. They get their protein from collagen and gelatin, which are low quality proteins your body can't use. If you search this forum for "collagen" you will find more info. You might find this article interesting too: http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/2013/08/13/the-importance-of-high-quality-protein

Holy Restriction!
I like shredded chicken breast with low-calorie sauces like barbecue sauce or low-fat gravy or "finishing sauce" which you can get premade in foil packets in the baking aisle. You really aren't having much of it so you don't really need to worry as much about the calories. Also fattier meat works better. I have found that lamb chops work well if cooked on the BBQ and cut into really small bites. One lamb chop does me! It is all about the texture and moisture for me.
