Holy Restriction!

Recommended Posts

So I just had lunch, well I tried anyway. I literally had less than an ounce of chicken and maybe 5 well cooked green Beans and I'm stuffed and have the burps. I'm a little miffed because it was really yummy. I'm 5 weeks out today and this is the most restriction I've felt, so far. I've been able to consume 3 oz of food until now. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for the restriction as it is the reason why I had surgery. But an ounce of food is not going to put much of a dent in my Protein requirement. Well, I guess that's what Protein Shakes are for. What gives?

Pray that good restriction continues. At 3.5 years, I am still amazed at how good mine is, and I HOPE that it never changes!!! Congrats on your decision to become a loser!!!

If I had to guess based on my experience? It's the chicken. 5 months out, my husband and I still have great restriction with chicken, as in almost too much. We can barely get in a few bites before---thunk! The moister it is, the more shredded it is, the better off we are with it, but it's really difficult for us.

I think many people find one or two "thunkers" like that.

Wow, I hear lots of folks talk about chicken being hard to take in, I haven't had chicken yet, I still have some weeks before I can have chicken. I hope you put it up for later...and for the next time....wow we ought to be saving money :P :P

What's weird is that I had the meat of a whole small skinless chicken thigh yesterday, which was about two ounces. Today it was the frozen fully cooked diced chicken breast that I cooked in a little broth so it was moist. It was my first time eating green Beans, but I sautéed them to death with onions, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. I don't know.

The other weird thing is though that my restriction varies from day to day. The last few days, I've been able to eat just fine but my husband can't eat much of ANYTHING without it going thunk. It's very confusing some days.

Tell you what, I didn't even have pots and pans small enough to cook what we eat! I make two little chicken thighs, and we get four meals out of them. I make 1 lb of ground beef, and we eat it for four meals. it's crazy.

I'd strongly suggest you shred the chicken in a food processor or a kitchenaid bowl, and add mayo to it before you try it the first time or something else with fat in it to moisten it. It will go down much easier :)

I am three months out and almost never eat chicken. The times I have made it at home, and ate it, it always felt like it got stuck in my throat. The only chicken I have been able to eat easily and successfully is rotisserie chicken from

the supermarket. It's juicer and more tender than most, it seems.

Agree. I also make a very moist chicken in the crockpot that is so easy but it is even more moist than the rotisserie.

Cut up an onion and place at the bottom of the crockpot. Put a whole chicken in or put pieces in, either seasoned or not, as you prefer. Shut the crockpot and cook (no need to add water) for four hours on high or 8 hours on low.

the chicken falls off the bone and there's so much "juice" in the crockpot that you can use to keep it moist, or make a sauce etc out of the broth. We are able to eat that pretty easily and it shreds almost too well.

Ooh, that sounds good. I will have to try that. Thanks!

Dark chicken meat sits good with me. Chicken breast does not. The only times I've barfed was due to chicken breat meat. 2x now.

I've just decided to stay away from it and stick to my thigh or leg meat.

Me too! I used to eat nothing but chicken breast and now I'm so afraid to try it plain. I can so it when it's mixed and shredded with the dark meat from the crockpot, but nol I get on it's own.

Me too! Lived off the breast meat. Today I had HALF an ounce of it and it came right back up. Finally realized that both times I've barfed and any time I've had the slimes have been because of breast meat.

It will take me a while to get used to the thigh and leg. I'd rather have a soy burger than both of those.

I guess its a good thing that I like dark meat. But I like to buy the Tyson fully cooked chicken and that's usually breast meat. I guess I'll have to see if they make thigh meat.

I agree the restrictions change all the time. I was getting just under 800 calories for a while then all of a sudden I struggled to get in 300-350 calories and now back up to 800. So weird.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
