You are where you are right now because that is where you need to be. I truly believe that everything in our lives is for our good even if we can't see it right away. You will make it and you will be okay. It stings when people make rude comments even though what other people say shouldn't really matter. Just pray for her that she will learn tact because you are doing what you can to change your life and its nobody's business but yours and God's.

OMG I totally agree with you. Sweets don't appeal to me post surgery any more. Not sure why but I'm not tempted. And I do the same thing...I crave real food, am getting adventurous in trying different healthy things in the kitchen and just slowly eating and relishing the flavor of every bit I take. It is a whole new experience for me and I love it. It's almost like everything tastes 1000% better than ever before...probably because I'm not gulping it down. Or maybe because I was deprived of solids for almost a month. Either way, I am truly enjoying it.

This is the best part of being banded so far...Learning to eat slowly and finally pay attention to what I am putting in mouth. I have to chew so slowly that the flavor of the food is broken down. For instance I recently ate a Weight Watchers frozen meal. All I could taste was how processed the food was. It was gross. Now I find myself only wanting "real foods" and appreciating how good they are. For instance I had grilled chicken, black Beans and a little bit if rice for lunch today. One of the best meals I've ever had and healthy too.

I will be banded on Wednesday and I keep coming back here because this is my LapBand home. I feel so comfortable coming here and talking about anything... Asking questions, getting advice, or just venting. Also reading what others are saying and being able to help them or just share my thoughts and opinions helps. Its our judgement free zone and i love it. I'd be lost without this site.

tjmiller reacted to DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! in Smoking
There are many reasons they tell you to stop smoking. The main one being that if you smoke, you're at much greater risk to having an adverse effect to the anesthesia. The chemicals in cigarette smoke adhere to the red blood cells making them far less effective oxygenating the body properly. Also, it makes it harder to recover after surgery and more likely to wake up with a tube down your throat because your body simply can't get the oxygen it needs.
After surgery, smoking seriously interferes with the healing process and people who smoke are far more likely to suffer infections, bleeding, and wounds that don't heal properly.
The 4 week thing is because WLS is an elective surgery thus they can make whatever rules they want to do it. 4 weeks not smoking allows the body time to rid itself of all trash and toxins, reducing all the smoking related risks. I've known surgeons who actually nicotine test their patients and if they test positive, cancel the surgery.
Quitting sucks, I know, I quit smoking 18 months ago. But, you're getting WLS to be healthy, why not actually be healthy and quit smoking too?
    Best wishes.

Once you're done with the post op diet, sure, you can have it once in awhile. Just be sure to log it and count it in your total daily calories.
There are some healthier options, like making homemade pizza with whole wheat flat bread for crust and using the lower calories Tomato sauce with low fat cheese. Add a bunch of veggies, maybe some turkey sausage, and you're good to go.

    tjmiller reacted to jg9956 in 2 1/2 months...down 49lbs :)
Banded on 11/2/12, down 49lbs total. Lost about 19 pre-op (10 day diet) and 40 since surgery. I had one fill on 12/10 and that was it. I don't think I even really needed it, but it was small, 1cc. I've been to the Dr. twice since then and he has not wanted to give me any more fills, as I'm losing very well without them. I'm fortunate to not have any difficulties thus far. I read about people getting "stuck", not being able to eat certain foods, that's just not me, and I'm so thankful. It's as if I do not have a band at all. I keep my portions right around 1 cup, I eat around 1000-1200 calories per day, some days slightly more. I do not limit myself from sweets or carbs, however I calculate them and track them. I have not touched a soda, regular or diet in months. This is a BIG deal, I was like, 6 diet pepsi's a day a few months ago. I don't eat fried foods for the most part, but recently on vacation, I indulged slightly. Had a few Margarita's and some chicken wings...but again, I tracked AND exercised! I love the feeling of finally being able to eat the foods I love, just not a lot of them, and being Ok with it. I still have missteps, I'm not perfect. The fact that I own a cupcake/cake bakery doesn't help with my love of sweets, but I'm doing so much better. Instead of a giant muffin and a croissant for Breakfast and a cupcake and a cookie in the afternoon, paired with a pile of fries, a burger and a diet coke...then dinner, oh my...well past 9pm...not good, NOW it's greek yogurt for breakfast, a high Protein lunch and maybe, one cupcake a week or a taste of one of my new creations, or a small cookie. I eat something sweet everyday, but because I have to. I have to taste test everything I make that's new, and right now I'm testing superbowl and valentine's items. Nonetheless, I feel I'm finally winning the war against the fat and all the stupid diets I've spent so much money on over the years. I am currently knocking on wood that my success keeps going in the right direction. If I plateau, then I will adjust the carbs/sweets, but for now, it's working for me to keep it in my diet so that I do not binge. It's hard everyday, but seeing the results has been my motivation. Im in 16 jeans now (down from 22's) and my shirts are getting looser. Not loving the boobs, since they are not decreasing at all, but that's another story. Hoping to have a reduction when I hit onederland... It was so nice to go on vacation and dress up everyday because I loved the way I looked! Ok, enough of my bragging...lol. I'm just happy and finally ready to share it!

You guys were talking about mushies today...I made this today and I thought it was pretty tasty: a little bit of fat free re-fried Beans microwaved with a bit of low fat cheddar cheese to taste, stirred well and topped off with some mild taco sauce (nothing spicy).

I'm 2 years in since surgery, and have been at my goal for a year now.......
I often winder how I could possibly gain the weight back....I did not do this on my own
The very thing that caused me to loose the weight, is still there with the same adjustment......
The way I figure it, something would have to happen to the band, say a medical emergency or something where I would have to get a unfill allowing me to overeat again.
Otherwise I cannot understanding it happening to me....
I know there are many people who post here stating how they gained much/most of their weight back....and I do not doubt them....but I also wonder what percentage was their effort
and what percentage was the band doing the work....
In my case, it's 90% band....

I've eaten cake with my new lifestyle change do I don't see it as a diet but a new way to make healthy choices the majority of the time with an occasional treat. Doesn't mean you eat the whole cake but a sliver.
I've eaten cake a few times, about two bites and am over 80 pounds down since July 2012.
You learn to eat like a slim person with the odd treat.
