I expected all the worst, and got all the best! The first 24 hrs. after surgery was rough because I was STRICT NPO, not even a single ice chip! That made me gag a few times. After that it was all uphill. They want us to sip an oz. of Fluid every 15 minutes after that first 24 hrs. Well, in a couple of days I was doing FOUR oz. every 15 minutes, and my pain was well managed by the meds prescribed. (I had a pretty good sized hernia repaired, so that caused some discomfort.) My healing progressed in a textbook fashion and I've not had a single complication (Thank you GOD!!) And I can eat any and all foods without problem or pain, and I've not thrown up once since surgery, and I've never "slimed." This could not have gone any better. I'm just amazed every day. I've lost almost 85 lbs. since February. I've got absolutely nothing to complain about.
One thing I've noticed around here- aside from the "NSVs" we never really report when we "feel good." It doesn't seem that interesting or require a response. Most people post when there is trouble, or can wear a smaller size pants. We just don't think to say, "hey, by the way, I had a really non-complicated surgery." And maybe we should, just so all you noobs can see that it's not just doom and gloom in your future. I think there are a great number of us who had a terrific experience. Hopefully you'll hear from more....

No issues here. It is surgery and you have to muscle through it. The first week was rough, but my surgery was free of complications. Thank the Lord.
    Good Luck!!!

Jennlhp... Does the LHP stand for Lighthouse Point? Are you at Cleveland Clinic? I had surgery on 4/20. Other than nausea while in the hospital, this has honestly been a cakewalk. I also had 90 lbs to lose (now only 30 left to go after 16 weeks). It's saved my life. I was also scared to death and never thought I'd actually go through with the surgery. But I did! ZERO regrets.

Well, after countless hours and days, I've decided NOT to go through with the VSG. I'm healthy at 90 pounds over weight. I will do everything I can to lose these 90 pounds the natural way. I will be meeting with a weight behaviorist to get help with my addiction called food. That combined with weight watchers will hopefully be what I need to succeed. I just wanted to thank everyone on this site who helped me make an informed decision based on what was best for ME. I wish everyone much success with which ever road they chose on this weight loss journey!!

Utimately it is your decision, if you are only 90lbs away from goal with no co-morbid diseases I would encourage you to loose it naturally. I don't see the need of WLS on people that are not severely overweight or don't have serious medical problems. If your truly that scared perhaps you should focus on a strict diet and see if your able to loose weight that way. It may even motivate you to stay on the "natural track"! You never know! I would never encourage anyone to do anything they are not comfortable with. If you really are that scared you should definitely weigh your options and reconsider.

Thanks all! I just don't want to end up worse off. Other than needing to lose 90lbs I'm healthy. My surgeon made it sound like a piece of cake ( no pun intended). I know it will hurt and I will be sore, but there are so many people in here for weeks out that can't even take a sip of Water without throwing up. That just seems crazy to me.

Very Happy I did this! We all have some issues, after the fact. It's all about you and your body what happens. I still have heart burn after 5 weeks post op. Just take your time and I'm sure in the long run you will do great.

I am almost 11 weeks out and I have not had one complication. I have only had nausea once and that is because I ate too much too fast. I feel like I have never had anything done except that I am not able to eat as much.
I recommend the surgery highly for anyone that is going to follow the guidelines given to them by their physician. My advice is educate yourself as much as possible, pray for guidance, and follow the basic rules post op. Pain was never even an issue. There is some soreness but nothing that walking and taking it easy for a few days won't help.
    Best of luck to you!

Jenn, many of us had complications and would do it again. It is such a personal decision, so research not only here ut check other sites, find out if you can go to support groups or speak with someone your doctor has sleeved.
My life has changed so much, I am alive and happy!
Oh and Mina sorry about your condition, hope you gain health in those areas as well.
    Good luck.

I didn't have any issues. Did my surgery outpatient. Didn't use any pain meds after night 2. I had abdominal discomfort on my left side that was alleviated with a heating pad. I did walk hunched over for 3 days. I even drove for 10 hours 4 days after my surgery. I followed my lifting restriction and my diet. No regrets even though I am a slow loser...31 lbs down in 3 1/2 months, 59 more to go.

I have Lupus and a brain tumor and a neurological condition. I had surgery and I had a pretty serious complication.
The day of surgery the complication was explained to me. It was pretty big and even that day I would do it again. I had about an hour of regret that was not complication related and that was an allergic reaction I had to the stuff I had to drink for the leak test.
I hate my shakes I used to like, my taste buds changed and I hate the smell of chocolate now. I don't know anyone else that had this happen to them.
I would still do it all over again. Stop reading the horror stories and start spending your time writing all the reason why this is important. Live it and learn it and when you go to the hospital, I went in with a smile on my face, I hummed and made the nurses hum the same song, and I smiled until i was knocked out and woke up to find out about the complications and when my doctor came in to see me and tell me a bit about the complications, I said to him...how are you? Are you doing okay and I smiled at him.
Positive attitude goes a long way. Good Luck. If you are to the point you are having anxiety attacks and can't take it, then by all means, maybe this isn't the best option for you. But since November 2011 when I started the program to June 4th, the day I had the surgery I decided to put 100% effort into it and it's paying off.
    I would do it again.

I didn't have any complications. I have had issues with significant pain though. I'm 4 weeks out today. Would I do it again even with all the pain issues I've had? 100% heck yes!

I'm in the same boat as you. I just visited the surgeon 2 weeks ago and have been reading and reading. I went to one of the support meetings the weight loss dr puts on and met a couple of people that were very happy that they did it. I plan on going to as many of those as I can in the next 3 months (that's how long I have till insurance approves it). Best of luck.

Yes, I am 1000% glad I did it and would do it again. I had no complications, just the usual stuff they tell you comes with the surgery. The first week is the hardest, the first month is the second hardest, and then it just got better and better from there. I've lost 82 pounds in 5 months with another 40-50 to go, not to concerned with exact numbers. I feel the best I've felt in 8 years (gained most of my excess weight in a single year) -- just got home from the gym, in fact. Did laps in the pool, treadmill, and some strength training. Could NOT have done that 5 months ago on my own.

i didnt have many complications during or after surgery. my only complaint was minor pain around the surgery site. good pain management while in the hospital helped a lot too.
another thing that helps is your pre-op preperation. make sure you follow the diet to the T and loose as much weight as you can.
everyone is different when it comes to a major surgery like this. a lot of the complications are temporary as your body has gone through a lot of trama and needs to heal. you should be fine a few days after the surgery.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm scheduled for sometime in August too and have the same fear. I don't want to have the surgery then after say to myself "why couldn't I just eat less and do it the natural way". There are so many not so good stories on this site and that scares me a lot!! Other than being 90 pounds over weight, I'm healthy. I don't want to acquire problems from the surgery. I originally thought I would have the surgery, I would heal, eat less, lose weight, and have a great new life. From what I'm reading, it's like a battle to be normal again and that scares me!!!! I'm really on the fence. I was really gung how before I joined this site. Now, not so much. I don't know what to do,

I had two c sections and just recently had my sleeve on June 7th. Honestly, the only major discomfort from the surgery I had was gas pains but I walked, walked, and walked some more. And , of course, lived on gas x strips. The recovery from the sleeve is much easier than a c-section. If you are askin which is easier it is SLEEVE by far!!!
