I'm excited about my band to bypass revision on June 15th. I wish everyone the best in whichever surgery they decide.

When your sister in law that hasn't seen you in months (lives out of state) walks past and didn't reognize you.
Also, when you actually default to going into the "normal" stall in the public bathroom instead of the handicap stall.

My doc said that when working out , it's during those plateau periods that your body is trading fat for muscle. You're building muscle which weighs more and losing the fat so it can seem as if your weight is not moving, but you'll be losing inches elsewhere. Try that (tracking your inches) and see what you get. Also, the demon scale doesn't control everything. Look at how your clothes fit, your energy levels, all the little NSVs that your body has for you.

The best thing ever was my son flooding my bathroom including my scale. It's gone and I have yet to replace it. Stay off the scale!!! I was obsessed with how much I was losing until that day. I'm 6 months post op, 5'9 started at 243 and down to 175. I went from a size 20+ to a size 12. IT WILL COME OFF. The day I lost my scale was the day I said you know what I'm in no hurry. The best is yet to come. You had the surgery so now let it happen. Your not going to gain weight, you will lose it. It will happen. I was wearing a size 18 that day and when I went shopping I was in a 12. It was a WONDERFUL feeling. One day at a time

Your body needs to switch from starvation mode to fat burning mode give it time lots of Protein and Water. Don't give up!

myjourneyagain reacted to McButterpants in What is your "scale" strategy?
in the beginning I would weigh daily, sometimes more than that - GASP! I loved the days where I'd see a 2-3 pound weight loss, but on the flip side of that would lose my mind if I gained. The scale made me crazy. My husband hid the scale from me and brought it out once a week - that saved my sanity.
I did start a photo journal and took my measurements every month. This also helped - if the scale wasn't moving, I would take my measurements and, sure enough, I was losing inches. I'd take a selfie and see the difference in my body and face - I was getting smaller.
The scale is not representative of what's going on inside your body - the scale won't show you fat lost and muscle gained. A picture will show you that. How your clothes feel will show you that.
Now, nearing two years out, I weigh probably 1-2 times a month. It just doesn't have the same control over me it has had over the past 25 years of my life. I will never hand over the power to the scale again - it's not worth it.

I just had my 3 month NUT meeting this week and she warned me of this down the road. She said what I would need to do if/when this happens is to eat 5 small meals per day instead of 3 so my body would know that calories are coming and be willing to burn fat instead of holding on to it. So counter intuitive.

Yup, I had the same thing happen to me. I was told by my trainer and bariatric team to eat more and back off my excercise a little bit, it broke the stall and I began losing again.
Then I had major spine surgery and have been restricted from anything other than walking. Which by the way is not as easy as it once was due to pain. When I started losing quickly again I was even more confused!
Here I was barely doing exercise but following a 1000 calorie a day diet and my weight was coming off slowly but surely. Then I stalled again for almost a month.
Because I could not exercise, I have had to be very very careful about what I eat. The weight just comes off slower now but it still comes off which is what is important.
Anyway, I was shocked that I was told to exercise less and eat more but it certainly worked!

I stalled for a month. So frustrating and I thought what was I doing wrong? Nothing my body just needed some time to adjust and I also realized I was eating ENOUGH for as much as I worked out. So take that into consideration. I was only eat 400-500 calories a day and worked out 6 days a week and not some light jogging or walking either. So I upped my calories and really focused on getting the right types of food in and it broke my stall. Just hand in there. our body's our mysterious things

myjourneyagain reacted to Dream4tc in Band removed 3 years ago, now thinking Sleeve?
I had lap band for 4 years, and developed prolapse then 9 months later a slip with horrible heartburn and reflux. I have had it removed, and initially wanted the sleeve but my surgeon said that a sleeve would make the reflux worse due to the high pressure a sleeve causes. Banding is a restrictive procedure and so is sleeve. He told me weight loss would be slower with sleeve going from restrictive to a restrictive. He also said sleeve would be more risky after banding and would put me at greatest risks for leaks and it would be a more complicated procedure. Plus once they remove your stomach, it is gone forever. With bypass, you can keep your stomach and it is reversible, not easily and not done often but it can be done. After doing research, I found out he was right. He told me that RNY has been performed since the 1970's and there is alot of research. He also said that I could do the sleeve and run the risk of heartburn and possible 75 pounds loss with diet compliance and exercise, and if the heartburn gets to be too much to revise to RNY......no thx, don't want heartburn, and don't want to keep having surgeries. He said I could lose about 100 more pounds with RNY and weight loss would be a bit easier with diet and exercise. I am choosing RNY and in the process of meeting insurance requirements, for bypass in late October or early November. As far as making a choice, this choice should be yours because it will be happening to your body. Do more research on both procedures. These forums are great for all opinions, but everyone is different and what may work for some, may not for others. Get 2nd or 3rd opinions, and gather as much info to help you feel comfortable in your choice. I truly wish you the best in whichever you decide.

Scar tissue isn't typically a problem, just a lil more work for surgeon, as they need to remove it. I would not worry too much about it.
My suggestion - do the RNY. I had the lap band 2005; then sleeve 2008; NOW getting what I have avoided due to fear RNY 9/14/15. Not to say you will not be successful with the sleeve, because you will, BUT as with any WLS - need to watch your diet and need to exercise- bottom line. Personally, my feeling is, anyone with a BMI 49 or higher should have the RNY. This is my LAST rodeo! I have Osteoarthritis also, along with Multiple Sclerosis, and had a total knee replacement last year. I am 42 and have had about enough now.
Good Luck with your decision! Make sure you search deep. Ask yourself truthfully, why is it you want the sleeve.
    God Bless

I totally agree with this philosophy. After all, studies have come out recently stating weight loss is 90% diet. Excerise helps increase metabolism, but if you aren't consuming enough calories, your body tries to hold on to any fat reserves it can. So either eat a little more to compensate, or cut back on the excerise. Either way, you gotta change things up to get out of that stall!

I hate to admit it, but I majorly slacked back on my exercise routine because any day that I get intense with exercise, I have gained weight overnight, and am way hungrier than if I just leave it alone. I heard from MarksDailyApple.com ( a primal/paleo community) that instead of "eat less / exercise more" the formula should be "eat more / exercise more" or "eat less / exercise less". Just something else to confuse me.

My dietician told me about Fairlife milk too. It is highly filtered. After my bypass, I became allergic to milk, so I started using Fairlife. It is great!!! You can get it at most grocery stores now. I am a band to bypass too. Congrats on the big decision! I am so glad I got rid of that band. It never settled right for me. The bypass is so much more practical for real life. And I lost all my weight very easily by following the rules, Protein first, then some veggies and fruit. But it takes awhile to get to the regular food stage. Hang in there and remember your stomach needs time to heal right and that is why you can't eat regular foods for awhile. Good luck! Tracy

myjourneyagain reacted to Babbs in Any Regrets?
Most have regrets very soon after surgery. You're dealing with some pain (honestly not too much), you miss food, your tummy feels funny, you're tired, it's a damn full time job the first few weeks just to get your fluids and protien in....I could go on.
Fast forward a couple months. You are starting to feel normal, you can ALMOST eat everything again, and you've lost weight! And more than likely you have been taken off your meds for diabetes and high blood pressure. Score!
Fast forward a year or 2. You have lost so much weight that people don't recognize you! You actually exercise, and you love it! ( Well, maybe) You've had to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, and you look and feel better than you have in years! Except for some much needed restriction that helps you to not overeat, especially in situations where you're tempted, you feel completely normal. And you LOOK normal. You're finally not the fattest person in the room. You FINALLY feel in control.
    What's there to regret??

I agree but Christmas break would probably be better because that's 2 full weeks. I thought I was going to have to have mine originally during that time because I'm having a revision from band to RNY, but because my band didn't slip I'm blessed to be having everything Done on the 15th. Summer is perfect for recovery. I hope things work out for you! #teachersrock
