My Visit With My Pcp...ugh!
My 17 year old daughter has PCOS and her doctor just put her on a high dose 2000mg a day to help with getting her weight off. She broke her foot about a year ago and had to quit teaching dance because it hurt so much. She gained 60 pounds this year. He told her that it was at the top of his priorty list to get the weight off her however possible before she become diabetic or ruins her chances of having children and he hoped the metformin would help. She has only been on it about 3 weeks, but hasn't lost but about 3 pounds. I hate watching her go through the same thing I deal with...but at such a younger age. I was able to keep the weight issue at bay until about 8 years ago.

What Ti Say To My Co Workers..
Thats what I was worried about.....at first I was just going to tell my family, (you know, you have that little fear that you will fail...then everyone would think you can't even lose the weight with surgery). Then I thought but if im successful, I would surely want to share what made it possible.....and if you tell one person, you might as well tell them all...because people just can't keep a secrete. And I'm not good with the half truth thing I just couldn't face people that kept asking me How I'm loosing the weight and I tell them eat right and exercise....then they find out I had a wsl surgery.....I would feel wrong. And besides, whats wrong with it...we act like its something to be a shamed of. Most people paticipate in some activity that is bad for them....smoking (would we look down on them if they went to be hypnotised?), Drinking (would we look down on them for seeking help?) I'm proud of ourselves!! we took control...we are doing what is neccesary to save our lives!! and if one other person can learn something from it ....then that would given be better. You have every right to keep it private!! But I hope that you have a few good people around you that will support you and cheer you on. Good luck!

In A Slump
Sounds like you know what you have to do. You are a sucess!! So grit your teeth and tie up those shoes and get to work. You CAN do this!!! Just keep telling yourself "failure is not an option" if you are stumbling on certain foods...get them out of the house. Don't self-sabatage yourself this close to your goal!! I know you can do this!!! Let us know who you are doing.

To Measure Or Not. Will I Regret It If I Don't?
I have never heard of anyone that looks back and says " boy I wish I wouldn't have measured myself".......so do it, for some it will not be important.....for others it will be their strength in the slow times. But this way you are covered. And if you want them....you'll have them.

Feeling A Little Discouraged
Make sure you are getting enough Protein. And definately add some form of exercise to your day. It doesn't have to be much to start but its good to start establishing a routine. Get a beginner workout tape. Walk around your neighborhood, do wall push ups, walk up and down your steps 3 or 4 times....just move!! start with 15 mins...then work up to 30 and so on.. I made a deal with myself that while watching tv in the evenings, every commerical I must do some form of exercise......sit-up, wall push-ups, leg lifts, lifting weights.....if I watch tv for 2 hours thats comes to a 40 min workout. every little bit helps.

Omg!! I Have To...
I have 3 children 17,15,13....2 of which have weight issues....so this year I declared the Easter Bunny Dead!! he died of an over dose of candy!! They were too old for that crap years ago, but I would do it for fun each year. This year I gave them a pack of life savers and $5.....In addition, (my in-laws live with us....are are half the reason my kids are over weight.....done of them were when they moved in 7 years ago) I warned my in laws that They would be wasting their money if they bought them candy this year....I would be throwing it out before they even see it.....so instead I suggested they buy them movie tickets.....they did....... and we all were happy campers.

Short Of Breath And Dizzy
I felt similar while in the hospital....everytime I would take a deep breath it would cause pain in my left lung. so I had to take short shallow breaths which made me feel like I was short on breath....it actually spent the nurses in a panic apparently that is a sign of a clot.....I knew it wasn't that...but then they had a hard time finding a pulse in my right foot...everyone jumped into action....I kept saying...I don't think its that bad!! but untill they found the pulse with a dopler machine and had a x-ray taken of my chest, I was watched like a hawk. Since you are only 4 days out, I think it would be worth a call to your doctor just to make sure he doesn't want to see you. But I'm I'm sure its probably just the gas settling around your lungs making it hard to breath. It should pass in a few days. Mine lasted about a week before it all went away.

April Shower Challenge
I walk 3 days a week with either my best friend or one of my teenage children......so on these days its a great time to talk. I have had some real meaningful conversations with my oldest daughter that will be headed off to college in the fall....its been very special. The other 3 days I tend to do the same thing as -justdoit- does....I like to watch TV while I do the elliptical. My first goal was to make it through a 30 min show and now I'm working to make it through a 60 min show. 1 day a week i end up doing some of the yard work.....its there I enjoy listening to the big hair bands of the 80's

Time To Reach Out And Say Hello
Were you following your post-op diet? all doctors are different, some advance their patients more quickly than others...so I was just wondering if you broke the rules, or if that was the post-op plan. I think advancing slowly does several things....first it does allow the stomach to rest and sutures to heal with out the weight of food pulling on them. Second---And what I noticed the most was it allowed be to break the carb addiction. after two weeks of the liquid pre-op diet and then the 2week of post-op diet I found that my cravings for carbs had decreased tremedously. Thirdly....I guess to some extent, our stomach most shrink a little. Just from previous diets I remember trying to have a bigger meal after I'd been following a small portion diet and you simply can't eat as much. But the stomach is a muscle and it does stretch and it would only take a few times and I would once again be able to eat the larger portions.--however, thats different from the "pouch" we have. If you don't have any restriction then the food is going straight to your actual stomach....its not until you have fills that the entrance to the full stomach is restricted...thats when you really need to be careful..if you eat too much, that food can't just fall to the full stomach it sits there at the band filtering in a little at a time. if you really over eat you can mess thing up and cause your band to slip. HAve you done any permant damage? probably not.....If you didn't follow the rules, then I would suggest maybe going back and doing them. a week of liquids might jump start your system. Then advance slowly.... if you feel the need to move on to a different stage than your doctor reccomended then call and ask him if you can move up. I had absolutely no issues, so at my 2 week post-op I asked if I could move on, he allowed me to do mushies for 2 day then advance to solids.....I wanted to get back to the low carb diet and purees and mushies are very carb friendly. Good Luck!

Starting A Stall After Lap Band Surgery
Some of you are really hard on yourselves!! I know we all want the weight to fall off... and we are working so hard, it should....but remember 1-2 pounds are normal. So 10 pounds a month is great!!! Thats 35,000calories!!! I agree with the mixing things up a little. Our bodies (and minds) get complacent and we need to keep them sharp!! Hang in there. We're going to get there!!!

New To The Low Carbs And Need Help, Please!!
Hi marla, I agree those numbers sound great!!. I try to stay about 800 calories/60+protein/-30carbs. I will try to keep the carbs to less than 30 and will only eat them at one meal not spread throughout the day. I love sausage....so I have been eating 1 jimmydean Turkey sauage patty for lunch it has 60calories/3.5fat/0carbs/6.5protein and I have really enjoyed every bite!! I use net carbs....meaning that if a food has 10 carbs you can subtract whatever is listed under Fiber from the carbs...so if it had 3 fiber you would only count 7 for carbs. If you don't already have something to track calories/protein and carbs, I would suggest the myfitnesspal....you can set a goal for each.

Stuck For The First Time :(
Ok this sounds silly...but I actually did the same thing on lunch meat last week at a friends house....I was talking and eating and forgot to chew, chew ,chew...I knew instantly what I had done. I actually started to break out in a sweat!!...I felt it in my back something aweful....I didn't know what to do...and realy didn't want her to know what was going on so when she went down stairs to get the laundry I went and hung myself off the bed kind of upside down. the gravity made the food come back up.....Worked....not for sure if it happens again how many places will have a place for me to hang upside down, but just another technique we can put in our arsonal for another time-haha Hope you are feeling better now

Urge To Over Eat
I have noticed a significant decrease in my hungar since the surgery. (excluding the 2 week liquid post-op diet----My stomach growled so hard for so long it was actually painful!) 3 weeks out (today)I have cut back to 2 (food) meals a day. each about 250 calories and 2 protein shakes for a total of 300 calories (or for the day its 800calories/60protein/30carbs) With very little effort. I didn't think he put any fluid in my band during surgery, but something has changed. My first fill is the 26th.

Foods To Eat & Foods To Stay Away
Hi Kelly, Im sorry things are rough right now. How long has it been this way? What things are you trying to eat? Are you following the rules....chew,chew, chew? Have you spoke to your doctor? Is it possible to need an unfill? Sorry for all the questions...but it helps to have a few more details when giving advise. Hang in there I'm sure things will get better.

Anyone Successful After A Bad Start?
Pixie Power....don't feel that way. It will just make things worse for yourself. Tomorrow is a brand new day!! You just need to get your head in the game! Think about what things are making you stumble? Do you have those foods in the house? Is it a certain time of day or month that is making it hard on you? Are there certain people who sabatage you? There are two times that I have learned that will derail me in a heart beat. 1. If i go too long and get VERY hungry, then I will automatically start eating the most convenient foods that I can get my hands on. Im like this almost every Monday....I leave the house early and won't be home until late....when I walk in the door I could be fit tot be tied...So now I will make me a snack and have it ready in the frig ...so when I walk in the door I have a healthy snack ready to eat while I make dinner. 2. That horrible one week a month!! I can undo 2-3 weeks worth of work in that one week!! Most of the time the chips or carbs that are in the pantry won't bother me...but when that week comes!! look out....So now about a week ahead of time I throw it all away!! or I just won't buy anything that week that I will want. So the answer to your question, Yes you can still be a success. But you have got to figure out what your triggers are and figure out a way to avoid them. You can do this!!! Change your mindset to "failure is NOT an option" if you have a bad....you had a bad day....move on and refocus.

Eating During 1St Post Op Week
Here is a list I put together befoe my surgery.....If you inbox me your email I will be glad to send it to you so you can print it out. I have tried numerous times to attach it to this site some how, but it just won't work. Just remember every doctor is different and where I put something may not be where your doctor would put it. Help Please With Interpretations Of Lab Results
Its been a long time since reading these types of reports but I'll give it a try. but it really doesn't look that bad. He is just noting a couple of lesions that are present on several frams...(meaning that it wasn't just a freak occurance and is actually there) most likely caused by the sever reflux. He notes that the first part of the intestines is normal. that the duodenum takes a slightly different path...(but thats probably fine....just different than the average person) and doesn't follow the same path as it would be exspected.......(if you haven't had huge problems in the past with your bowels, then it probably isn't an issue.....if you have then this twisting could be the cause.....but again A LOT of people could have this and don't even know it and would never be an issue. Then he concludes that even though a "twisting" is seen, the bowel appears to be open and the barium is flowing normally. He feels if necessary, the lesions could be viewed with endoscopy. The bowel malrotation can be viewed with a ct scan of the pelvis and abdomen. so in other words.......don't worry Nothing is jumping out that you have something terribly wrong. or an emergency.

My Lap-Band Journey :)
I have a daughter that is 17 and she is very mature. She is struggling with a lot of the same issues I did like PCOS. I don't think it should be your first option....It isn't a easy way out. But if you have underline issues that are keeping you from getting the weight off and have tried the other convential ways like weight watchers and south beach....then I definately think it is worth exploring....I wouldn't want you to wait another 5 years and gain more weight and end up with serious health problems. Just really take the time to educate yourself......make sure you are mentally and emotionally ready to make such a big decision. And listen to your mama!! Your mama knows you better than anyone else....if she feels like this is something you can handle, then I would support it....if she thinks it isn't the right time for you....then listen to her and take another year and try other methods to get the weight off.

Feeling Weak Today
Might want to check your sugar as well. I'm not diabetic, but was feeling really sluggish around day 8 of just liquids....I borrowed my mother in laws glucose meter and my sugar was 52.....so no wonder I was feeling so bad.High protein/low carb is a great approach and I actually keep my carbs at around 30 BUT that being said....I think the post-op time is more about healing and if you need carbs to do that then I would eat them (at least the good carbs). In a week or two you can switch to the high protein/low carb diet.

Hi Everyone!! Newly Banded!!
i was hungry 6 hours after surgery!!haha....maybe not quite 6 hours after surgery.....but I sure didn't get any of the swelling that most others experienced....kind of wish I had.....might have made the 2WEEK liquid post-op go just a little faster. But I made it and so will you.Hang in there drink those protein shakes just as soon as you are allowed ....they are a little nasty ,especially when you are limited as to what you can do to them during this time, but they do hold off the hungry pains a little.
