cheryl2586 got a reaction from kimmykimIN66 in Protein! How much and Why
This seems to be an ongoing issue with people of how much Protein I need and I am not losing weight. The correct amount of protein that people need to be eating per day is between 70 to 90 grams. Why? Because protein burns fat. If you fill yourself with carbs and slack on the protein you will expect a slower weight loss or no weight loss or being stuck for weeks with no weight loss. Yes plateaus happen. It is normal to have or hit plateaus but to keep things moving at a slow but steady pace your body needs protein in order to burn your fat stores. I have eaten as much as 120 grams of protein in a day. In order for your fat stores to burn, you have to feed it protein. If you are giving it carbs they carbs turn to sugar which then turn to fat. Yes carbs as in veggies are good except for the starchy vegetables such as peas. If you do not fuel your body with the amount of protein that it requires to burn fat then you are going to have many stalls or no weight loss along your journey. If you don't believe me then for one week eat very little protein and a lot of carbs and see what happens. I guarantee the end result will make you cry. Protein it does the body good so eat it. For those of you that can still eat red meat it will help you lose weight faster also because red meat takes longer to digest therefore burning more calories. You also have to have a deficit in calories to lose a pound. If you want to lose a pound a week then you have to have a 3,500 calorie deficit that week in order to lose a pound. If you are counting everything you are putting in your mouth at the end of the day your protein should out weigh your carb and fat intake.

Right now its not about getting in calories or Protein its about you healing. For any nutritionist to expect a certain calorie intake after abdominal surgery does not know what she is talking about and yes I have taught nutrition classes to lap band patients. The only thing you should be worried about now is staying hydrated and healing. Other then that you should not be worrying about how many calories you are consuming. Every time you put food in your stomach it has to work hard to digest it. That is why most surgeons put people on Clear Liquids at least for two weeks so that the sutures have time to heal before your stomach starts moving. I know each surgeon is different but the anatomy of lap band surgery is not.

I know it's aggravating but the slower the fills the better you are at not being over filled. I know you don't feel a difference as of yet but you will. Going slow gives you time to see exactly when you finally feel the difference. I have 3cc's in my band and have plenty of restriction. I got 1.5 both times and it was it. Its been two years since I had a fill. You don't want a large fill then have to go back and get some removed. Its frustrating yes but being too tight is hell.

cheryl2586 got a reaction from duckydoom in Is Vegan life so awful
After I got my lap band it became almost impossible for me to eat meat. It would get stuck no two ways about it. So I became a vegan. I started trying different things and have learned to successfully cook delicious meals that are meatless. So how do I get my Protein. Tofu, cottage cheese, yogurts, Beans, veggie burgers and yes I make home made black bean burgers that are better then any cow could produce. You may find you can't really eat a lot of meat after having lap band surgery but there are many ways to get protein besides eating meat. Once in a while I become stupid and think I just want a piece of meat and then it reminds me this is not for you anymore. I always was a lover of beans and we eat many different kinds and you would be surprised what seasoning can do. I have in my kitchen over 120 different spices and I use them. You have to be creative even if you can eat meat. You have to find recipes and make them your own. Yes I use butter and oil (olive) and in no way do I do fat free. Our bodies need a balance of good fats, good carbs and good Proteins in order to function properly and your body does not have to have meat in order to function. I don't need dead cow patties (hamburger) or pigs in a blanket or any other Bambi, Roger Rabbit or Daffy Duck. I am content being a vegan, I never eat the same meal in a three week period and I enjoy experimenting with veggies. Try it you might like it. I can't wait to get my garden started so that I can have a nice fresh stash of veggies to make so delicious you would want to eat them all.

cheryl2586 got a reaction from Cazzy in Band, Bypass or Sleeve in 2014: Which one?
Okay now for my two cents. Those statistics are not true. If only 1% of the patients don't lose weight out of all the thousands that have surgery then I would say that is pretty good. Secondly the Bypass and Sleeve have more complications then the band ever could from mal nutrition to paralysis. In my nursing career if you could see how many by pass patients are deathly ill and fat because of anemia then you would definitely not choose the by pass. The sleeve you are taking away 85 percent of your stomach that you can NEVER get back. The lap bands success rate does depend on the doctor and the doctors are tired of having to follow up with their patients so much that they are pushing the other two surgeries. Once anything happens with the bypass or sleeve you are screwed. You can never get back what they took away ever in life. More bypass patients get the band over their bypass because they failed to keep the weight off. We have had more successful banders on this website then unsuccessful. You can say what you want about the lapband but I can tell you from seeing it all that the bypass and sleeve are not anything I would want done with my body. My daughter in law is so sick with her sleeve she is down to 103 pounds from not being able to eat. If you want to post things to bash the band then do it in the other forums where those people will do it also. I guess the band is not for you.

If a half cup is not keeping you full then eat six small meals a day. At least you will feel fuller longer.

I guess I have been lucky because my primary is not interested as much in the scale as how I am feeling. He just wants me to be healthy and we had that talk and both agreed that I know what I need to do and stick to it and he doesn't have to keep reminding me every time he sees me. I guess he is really good like that. But he also doesn't believe in testing you for everything in the world to get money from the insurance companies. I go see him every six months to get my meds refilled and other then that if I have any issues he is there to talk to me.

Your whole weight loss depends on Protein. Your doctor should have given you a food list of what you should be eating. You don't want weight lifters Protein because we don't want to bulk up. You want whey protein with isolates. You really need to call your nutritionist and get her to explain the importance of your protein intake. You can't do this blind with not knowing what to eat and what we eat may not be what your doctor wants you to eat. Call the office and get things straight.

I love doctors like that because after you lose your weight you can send him a picture and tell him to eat his own words now. Stupid ass doctors. If they are so much in love with the sleeve or by pass then they should have their own office and only see patients who want those surgeries.

Not only would I go talk to the manager but I would be writing an email to corporate about her. She is there to sell books not give her opinion on what you are buying. I don't let things like that go when people are rude she has no business working with the public. What if you were buying sexual fantasy books would she have said you can't do that because its for skinny people. Ugh I hate rude retail people.

cheryl2586 got a reaction from kll724 in Maintenance- what does it look like.....
Well I will just say it is not so easy. You have to pretty much watch everything you put in your mouth because that scale will start moving the other way easily. I haven't strayed from my Protein. I don't do meat well so I eat mostly Beans, tofu, and such. You have to be careful because when you think oh I can eat what I want that is when the problem begins. It is very easy to put it back on. I would say losing was much easier then maintaining. Everyday is a struggle as to what to eat because I do not eat the same things over and over. It would just be so easily to tire eating the same foods daily. I think that maintenance is way harder then losing was.

1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded. I do season my squash with seasoning salt, black pepper and a pinch of dill

    1 clove garlic, minced

    1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes

    3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

    3 tablespoons sliced black olives

    2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

    1/2 cup of mushrooms

    1 tsp of olive oil

    Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
Place spaghetti squash with cut sides down on the prepared baking sheet, and bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a sharp knife can be inserted with only a little resistance. Remove squash from oven and set aside to cool enough to be easily handled.
Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion in oil until tender. Add garlic; cook and stir until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and cook until tomatoes are warmed through.
Use a large spoon to scoop the stringy pulp from the squash and place in a medium bowl. Toss with the vegetables, feta cheese, olives, and basil. Serve warm.
