I decided to come back here and start posting again because this is all I hear. I'm really nervous to tell anyone that I'm going to try to have VSG because of my previous experience - I had a lap band and had to have it removed due to intolerance... it's been 2 years band free, and I still hear "we told you that wouldn't work" from friends and family members. I also hear the "you're just fine the way you are" and of course the horror stories. If I wasn't at a point where I was able to lose the weight and keep it off on my own, I wouldn't be looking at this! The very small chance of risk outweighs the horrors of possible bypasses, liver failure, etc that I face if I keep gaining!

Here, here, me to.....depression and anxiety. I suffer from PTSD from a accident that left me disabled but ive had some bad mood swings since surgery. Idk if its hormonal or what but it can get bad at times. But ive learned to walk away and count to 10. I was in the store last week and someone made a racist statement to me because she wanted to get to where i was but she didnt say excuse me. I said to her excuse me would be the correct and fastest way to get here. She said this is why my kind isnt welcomed here anymore. Whats my kind? Wonderful, beautiful, intelligent.? The manager overheard her and asked her to leave stating they wont put up with those type of things in the store. Boy was she mad. I think if i wasnt on my meds, she wouldve seen another type of person. So i guess, theyre working....dont stress to much. But please try to count before snapping at the wife. If shes the one feeding you, she may snap back....lol hang in there

As you lose weight, the chemicals and hormones that were stored in your fat cells are being released into your body. These will pass through your kidneys and are expelled in your urine. But they can generate a flush of hormones during the weight loss phase. They should simmer down once you transition into maintenance. It is important to meet your daily Fluid requirements, because it take fluids to flush these hormones from your system.

I burst into tears several times during the first few weeks.. once at a table full of friends and family (humiliating). It's just tough. You're still hungry/full/confused as to which and your body is going through all kinds of changes. At 3 weeks out you're still healing, you're probably not eating real food, and you might still just feel crappy from going through a surgery.
You might be withdrawing from sugar or caffeine as well.
It was nearly 2 months before I felt like myself again. Once you start noticing your body changing it will perk you back up and you will adjust to this new way of eating. Just hold on! Call a therapist in the mean time if you need help!

I don't know why the doctors don't warn every patient about this...
Fat stores hormones. When you start dropping fat, the hormones are flushed back into your bloodstream. So you can experience SEVERE mood swings, crying jags, anger, depression and elation. And this can go on for as long as you are actively losing weight... so over a year or two - until your weight stabilizes and your hormone dumps get processed and normal production resumes.
Warn your family/friends that you may have a hair trigger because of this (if you feel like it may be an issue) and be prepared to do some serious self monitoring when you feel angry/irritated/depressed and remind yourself that it is likely hormone related, and give yourself permission to take a time out to deal with the feelings and do some self care if necessary.

One of my FB friends is about 6 weeks post sleeve and posted today that she doesn't understand how people could eat poorly after a surgery. As she is making the right choices. I hope we can all support each other on our individual journeys. Practice is far dirtier than Theory. In my opinion...

I'm a grazer. My restriction is SO freaking tight, I have to be. I also have to be extra mindful of WHAT I am grazing on. I will disagree with some of the advice above, but only because it is working **for me**.
I eat a shit-ton of cheese. I eat almonds. I eat beef Jerky and eggs. I eat lunch meat rolled with cheese. I can only eat a few ounces at a sitting, but I eat every two hours or so. I don't count calories or fat, I count carbs. As long as I stay under carb count, I am golden. When I introduce chips or cracker or bread, I am screwed. So I don't.

    Meat, cheese, veggies = loss.
    Carbs = gain.
This is my new normal and I am OK with it.

First, I would stop using words like bad and good with respect to both yourself and food. It isn't helpful.
Next, cut out high carb foods immediately and completely. The more you eat of them, the hungrier you will get. One of the reasons you are constantly hungry is that you are eating things like grapes (and probably even higher carb foods).
Take three days and let yourself eat as much as you want -- but only lean, unprocessed meats and green vegetables. Throw away the high calorie foods like nuts and cheese. They are not helping you. Yes, they can be healthy parts of your diet, but not while you are getting back on track and trying to lose weight. Focusing on foods like lean meats and green veggies will help you re-focus on your restriction, make you less hungry, and re-establish the difference between true hunger and head hunger.
Finally, you may have to get okay with the idea of being hungry and just waiting until your next scheduled meal. Being hungry doesn't mean you have to eat. It isn't any fun to be hungry but you aren't in danger of starving to death.
If you are truly incapable of dealing with hunger in any way except eating, again, restrict yourself to lean meat and green veggies. When you get hungry, eat some green vegetables. If you don't want green vegetables or some chopped cold chicken breast, you aren't hungry, you are just experiencing cravings.

Start slow and get clearance from your doctor.
I like to lift heavy and had a pretty good 3x a week schedule going prior to surgery on top of cycling & kick boxing. I'm only in my second week post-op and doc wants me to wait a minimum of six weeks before lifting again. I'm looking forward to my regular workout schedule, this walking is for the birds!

duckydoom reacted to 50yearoldme in Seeing so many people questiong their decision
I was trolling Facebook this morning and so many people were questioning their decision... It got me to thinking about my life and how I got to where I am.
I am 50. Yes 50! This is gonna be my best year ever! I am the mom of two preteen boys! I am a happily married, Christian, stay at home mom. I trust my husband and his decisions and opinions. And he loves me no matter what. But it hasn't always been that way.
I was in a 17 year abusive marriage, I got married at 18 and it was downhill starting on our honeymoon... I spent the years running to food to eat away the pain. I would yoyo, lose, gain more, and ended up depressed and angry. My highest weight was about 325, maybe more, I was too ashamed to weigh myself...
So, when I turned 50 I decided to take care of myslef for the first time ever. This Jan or Feb I am getting sleeved! My husband, of 13 years now, is totally supportive, He wants me to stay by his side as we grow older together! My kids are worried, but my 12 year old said "Mom I just want you to be healthy and stay with me".
So for the first time in my life, I'm saying yes to me. I'm saying yes to life. I'm saying yes to taking control and taking care!
No one is taking my control away or talking me out of this. I want to do this for me
I''m Vlogging on YouTube under 50 year old me. I want to be held accountable. I want to surround myself with like minded people <3 I am so thanful to have found this site and to have found others who struggle with life the same way I do, and who have made the decision to fight for ourselves for the first time ever <3

Pre -Op from my TT I called the surgeon back. Between the one in surgery before me and me - He came back to my room and re-marked me as I was worried that when I leaned forwards the belly would still hang and be loose. He agreed and re-marked me and I am so glad he did.
So make sure you are happy pre-op and make sure he knows what you want - Yes they cannot do miracles (I think they can to be honest) and my PS said to have 'realistic expectations' but then he gave me the world - and more.....
Just make sure he knows what you want - You could take a picture with you of someone whose belly you like and show him what you are wanting, maybe.....
Oh and..... Importantly..... Wear a pair of the lowest cut panties! I did not do this and now that scar is not as low as I would like it... That is the only thing I would change if I could go back in time.....
Me not long after surgery... I think this was in approx Aug/Sept 2010...

And me recently on 24 Aug 2015... (Excuse the marks from the elastic trousers lol)

My scar is still a bit raised - I did not massage the scar as well as I should have and also - I did not wear the Micropore tape as long as I would do now - Knowing so much more now than I did all those years ago.....
In another Op I wore the paper tape (Micropore tape) for 10-12 weeks and that scar is soooo much better than this one - So I would tell anyone who has a scar - KEEP that paper tape ON!
It supports the scar and stops it from stretching as much when healing..... You will be left with a much flatter and finer scar if you keep your paper tape on and also stay in compression garments for as long as you can - This is a one time journey you are making hopefully so to stay in compression for 10-12 weeks as it is an investment in the future you.....
:-) Good Luck - You will be fine - Keep those eyes on the prize and that prize is a New Youuuuuu! <3

duckydoom got a reaction from sweesee in How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?
@@thomas1984 I'd just present it to him as a concern - "I was able to eat this much food and didn't feel full, is there a reason the mechanism of my sleeve didn't cause me discomfort?" That way it's coming out more as a question vs an accusation, less likely for him to be offended. Then you can discuss the size of the sleeve that he chose, if it's appropriate to "reset" the sleeve as others have mentioned, perhaps diagnostics to rule out any issues.
Good luck - I know how frustrating it can be when things aren't going as you've expected. Hopefully he has answers.
