Yes, a lot of posters are suggesting walking. Makes sense as the air would rise & come out somehow! How long was it before the gas wasn’t there anymore?

    Young 69 yrs

    69 yrs old and unsure..

I'm 69 and have a BMI of 36. Been gaining weight continuously my adult life. I'm OK'd for sleeve surgery mid september. Can anyone with a similar age and BMI tell me their experience. Do you regret making the decision this late in life. Have the post op diet restrictions felt like a sacrifice. Did the 30% weight loss offset those the diet changes. Any insight that would help me make a more informed decision is appreciated. Thank you

Alright friends, I failed to prepare, so I was preparing to fail, and need some guidance/help. I went to a wedding today about a 4 hour drive (in the sticks), and thought I was prepared by bringing a premixed protein shake and a small container of soup. I am about a week post op (ESG), so on a full liquid diet. I left both in my car while I went to the ceremony, social time and cocktail hour, planning to sneak away at various times to have a sip. Time flew by, much socializing occurred, and before I knew it, the soup had spoiled and the protein shake was also undrinkable. At that point, I was absolutely starving and within an hour (once dinner was served), I was dizzy and shaking, even with sips of water. I was worried about my well-being since I had to drive home later in the dark, so I had a few bites of soft sweet potato and tender meat, very very well chewed. I felt less lightheaded and made it back home safely, but feel truly terrible and worried that I messed up my stitches/sutures. Can anyone provide any support? Any idea if that was enough to mess me up? I have been doing so well and am still motivated to stay on track, but I am anxious. My tummy aches a little but it has been aching after basically everything I “eat” except water. Thank you.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

My plan is very balanced and does include carbs, but I have to measure and track or it can get out of wack quickly. I focus on proteins first, then veggies and carbs. My goal is 75 or more grams of protein per day. More than 64 oz of water and a calorie goal between 800-1200.

How painful is gastric sleeve post-op?

During my sleeve (when I didn't prepare lol), it lasted for like 4 or 5 days. Sharp shoulder pain, if I bent over to pick something up... Etc. But honestly, it wasn't that bad then either. When I did my revision, and I knew better lol, I began chewing them when I got home, and I was fine right away. This mentions walking, simethicone (e.g. mylanta) and other tips on dealing with post-surgical gas. https://healthproadvice.com/procedures/Getting-Gas-Pain-Relief-after-Surgery

Is it loose skin or fat?

@SpartanMaker is correct. There will always be a layer of fat under your skin. It’s something we need. So even under the loose skin there will be some fat which is why it is hard to tell. How thick (dense) the skin is if you pinch it may give you a bit of an idea of how much fat is left in that area. And pinch different areas around your body to compare as we carry our larger deposits of fat in different areas of our body. Have a chat with your surgeon or get a referral to a plastic surgeon & ask their opinion. If you are thinking about having the loose skin removed, they’ll likely advise to wait until your weight has been stable for a while. If you are just curious as to how much fat you have left, yes a body fat or dexa scan is your best bet.

I would be most concerned about shortness of breath and is something I would get in to see a doctor about as soon as I could. Good luck, Tek

    Was my surgery successful?

P.S. don't chase the full feeling - for one thing, most people don't feel restriction to around the time they start up on solid foods - or until the nerves that were cut during the surgery regenerate (which also tends to be around the time we move to solid foods). Plus the "full" cue is often different after surgery. I don't feel full the way I did pre-surgery. Now, it's more like a discomfort in my chest. when I feel that, I know it's time to stop, or I"m going to be sorry. Others have reported weirder things like runny noses when they're full. For now, you're better off measuring out what you're supposed to eat and just eating that. and no - your surgery is not unsuccessful. You're losing weight at a normal clip. And you'll continue to as long as you stick to your program.

Thank you! This was helpful, reminding me to listen to my body and stick to the basics. I’m hoping once I get to purées and have more Whole Foods to work with some of the problems resolve them selves. I was over my protein goal Friday and about 15 oz short on my water. Today I was over on my water about 20 grams short on my protein. I definitely need to make hydration the top priority, protein my next and not worry quite so much about calories.

    Post Op: Struggling a little

I'm 3 weeks out and still have that. I talked to my Dr and he said that it was very normal to have a ton of energy 1 day and then none the next. He said it's because the body is healing.
