I copied this posting from Soonergirl (hope she doesn't mind) I found it by using the search engine located on the top blue bar.

HERE IS SOONERGIRL'S POSTING:

I paid cash in Dallas - 15k with fills for a year.

I highly considered Mexico, but after much math and condieration, we decided to spend the money to have it here. When we started running the math, there wasn't as much $$ difference as you would think.

So, most of the places in Mexico that I would consider were about 10k + flight (about $300) and about at least another 50-75$ in misc. expenses for the trip. If my husband would have gone, add another 400$ or so.

Then, when you take into consideration the fills - with mine in TX, they are included for one year.

If I would have had to go back - $250-300/flight at about 4-5x = another 1-1.5k

If I would have had to pay for fills here - they were about $150 at the least with no floroscopy - mine here includes it.

I have had two fills already and I still am feeling little to no restriction ( I know that most people say that Mexican Dr.s are more aggressive with their fills, but I have 2.8ccs in a band that holds 4ccs, that is not at all conservative), so I would have been recking up fill expenses already.

My biggest concern was aftercare if something were to happen. i am only in my 30s and I am going to have this thing for a long time - long after the Dr.s in Mexico, or here are still practicing. I know that because of liablilty issues and malpractice, it is only going to get harder to find Dr.s that will take a serious complication for a patient that is theirs, much less for a surgery performed out of the country.

SO - as i mentioned, I don't doubt the competency of most of the Dr.s in Mexico - this was just my personal line of reasoning when making my decision.

Good luck!!

After exhausting the insurance route (they said no), I chose self-pay with Dr. Benevides in Richardson. $15K, fills for a year. Worth every penny...my surgery is tomorrow (10/27)

I went to Dr. Sanchez in Monterrey. I took a bus from McAllen to Monterrey, $36 round trip. I paid $7,999 for everything including pretests. Actually as the band gets more and more and common it will be EASIER to locate doctors for fills and adjustments. But I still figure the cost of needing approximatley 3 fills at some later date didnt justify spending an extra $7,000 to $8,000 to have it done in Texas, for me anyway.

Does the $15,000 include all pre-op testing? I'm going to pay for my surgery myself and am trying to figure out how much the pre-op testing might cost. I'm sure different doctors have different testing requirements and I'm planning on using Dr Spivak in Houston. Thanks!

I was self pay w/Spivak and the 15K did *not* include pre-op testing.

Thank you! It's very exciting!

Dr. Spivak only had me do blood work (I had been through the process before) and I went through my PCP so insurance covered it... although, I wonder if it may come back to me? Fingers crossed!

I really debated about using a well-recommended doctor in Mexico but I have no one to go with me and I'm nervous about having a complication, even a minor one, and being delayed in Mexico, as well as having a problem back home and not being able to get treatment here. I see so many testimonials from people who've had great success with the procedure being done in Mexico and it's very tempting. The list of fill doctors seems to be good (and gorwing). What will you do for your fills

I recommend asking for the names and phone numbers of patients that the patient coordinator took for surgery --- and ONLY patients who were done a year or more earlier. And I recommend taking a companion. If you have a spouse, friend or relative travel with you, they can fly for half-fare with a statement from the doctor. Same with bus and train fares.

Most surgeons have a yahoo group of ther patients and they all can all easily communicate and thus get together to share the company, as well as car, driving & travel expenses to get their fills done.

I am very close to McAllen and there is a doctor that is in Reynosa that my surgeon recommended for fills. I am so familiar with all the bordertowns around here... Matamoros, Progresso, Reynosa, that I think I will just make the 1 hour drive to Reynosa when fill time rolls around. However, if I feel nervous about that Dr. Sanchez goes to Reynosa periodically and said he could arrange a meeting for a fill. I really dont think the fill part is that big of a deal if done under flouroscopy. They had to do a "negative pressure" on me the day after my surgery, which entailed going to x-ray and swallowing barium and having a needle injected into my port to suck out some air. I had some excessive swelling. The doctor gives a tiny shot of deadener first and it was totally painless even while "fresh and raw" from surgery, lol. It was pretty intimidating and a little uncomfortable but in no way painful, so I have no fear of fills at all now (which will be a good thing). I am 6 days out now and sitting here sipping pureed, strained, and very thin cream of mushroom Soup. I did come out of surgery HEAVIER by 2 pounds than I went in. I guess your body hangs on to those i.v. fluids for a while. But as of today I am down 4 lbs from my surgery day weight. 4 lbs in 5 days!!!!!!!! I am sure that is due to the liquid part.

I'm going self pay in San Antonio through the Wish Center. They have a cash price of 10,950 which includes most of your preop, they just want you to have a recent physical, yearly woman exam, chest xray and a letter from your PCm clearing you health wise for an elective surgery. My surgery date is Dec. 26th!!!

I'm self pay $10,500 includes, pre-op tests, and fills for a year. Dr. Kim in Colleyvilles. It's nothing compared to the what I've spend the last 20 years in diets, pills, gym equip, clothes in 10 different sizes... as with anything, as the years go by price goes down.

I do not have insurance so I self paid for the procedure. The pretest was about $400.00. The procedure was $12,500 with only 6 fills then $100.00 per fill there after. The average in my area is about 12,000-15,000. Each doctor has their own final price.

Good luck.

Well I am self pay & I am going thru TLCEdge Surgery Center. Their cost is $9,990.00 That includes nutrionist, their doctor to do EKG and checkup, bloodwork, surgeon, surgery, anesthesia, after appointment with surgeon & 1 fill. Each fill after that is $100.00 I really like using them. They are very very nice and very quick. I went to a seminar on June 30 which was a one-on-one seminar which I really liked b/c I wasn't in there with soooo many people and I am getting banded on July 29, 2009. So I did everything within a month. Good Luck on finding someone.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
