Getting banded imminently, hoping for answers!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

After months and months of lurking and getting the cash together, I've finally got my date to be banded on Dec 4!

However, I have some doubts that I'm hoping someone can give me advice on.

I didn't expect them to book me so quickly. I went for a consult today and when they asked me if I wanted to come in a week later for my surgery of course I was excited and agreed!

Here's the rub. I got my binder and it says I have to quit smoking 2 weeks before the surgery to improve healing.

I haven't quit smoking! My zyban hasn't kicked in yet and even if I quit cold turkey this instant it would still not be long enough!

Do you think one week of prep/post op diet/few days off smokes/going on the operating table in nicotine withdrawal is wise? Should I reschedule? Opinions anyone?

Oh and Hi, forum!

I've actually never heard of anyone having to stop smoking for this surgery. I hope others have an opinion on this.

When I went for my consult they asked if I smoked (I don't), but they did put me through some rigorous pre admin tests for breathing and measuring lung capacity. This is related to the general anesthesia.

I would definitely check with your doctor if you have not followed their requests.. for your own health and safety.

Good Luck to you ..

I agree with Patterba and would not have the procedure without letting your surgeon know you are still smoking. Anesthesia and wound healing are big factors. Some doctors do blood tests to see if the patient is still smoking.

Well, I called and it's no problem for them whether I'm smoking, on zyban, just quitting or what.

So Dec 4 it is! Full steam ahead!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
