18 days post op and some strange pains (throat and back)...can someone explain

Recommended Posts

So I have 2 strange pains. I don't want to necessarily call the doctor's office on these, so I was wondering if anyone has experienced these.

First, I keep getting a stabbing pain in left side, middle of my back. Just for a few seconds, but keeps coming back. I am assuming gas, but this is a new pain for the last 3 days.

Second, I feel like I have something stuck in my throat now and then. Threre of course is nothing there, I don't feel sick, just almost feels like someone is grabbing my throat. I was thinking maybe blockage with food, but it doesn't matter if I am hungry or full, it just comes and goes. Is this normal?

Has anyone had either of these? Do you know what they might be? Any help is appreciated.

Dont worry both pains are normal from what I have been told.

I would get the worst choking feeling at all times during the day and night. For a while it would wake me up at night hours afte eating and drinking. When I went to see my doctor he explained my throat was still healing. I am a teacher and therefore need to talk alot and it was affecting me working during the day because I had to take a second for the choking feeling to go away if I was teaching. I went back to work 1.5 days after surgery and it didnt bother me till I stopped taking the meds the doctor gave me ( one week after surgery)

Now that I am 4 weeks post op it has finally gone. As for the back pain it took 3 weeks for the gas pains to go away and for me to feel better. I would get that sort of pain if I excerised. The gas took forever to leave!

A new pain I didnt get till a week after surgery was also my teeth and they were killing me. Mostly I took tylenol if my teeth hurt or if my throat was hurting too much and it went away.

The pain your back sounds like Gas. Take Gas x strips..3 or 4 of them.. and walk it out. As my surgeon put it.."your intestines go to sleep" while you are in surgery, and it takes a while for them to come back. The gas gets trapped in side of you and seems to move into your back/shoulder area. The more you move around the more your bowels will begin to work.. Those strips helped me alot. The gas was the worse for me. It goes away I promise.

For the pain in your back, try standing up against the wall, and roll on a tennis ball. It helped me.

Your esophagus works so closely with your upper stomach/pouch. That restriction you are feeling in your throat is from that, and the food you are eating. It is hard to get used to. Sounds like you have good restriction though.. that is good. Us people with the band need that, in order to keep losing.

Hope you feel better.. Good luck to you on your weight loss journey! :tongue2:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
