It's actually very common to gain up to five pounds in the few days after surgery. Happened to me too.

Remember this......you've been on liquids for a long time. Liquid is very heavy. Just Water alone weighs eight pounds per gallon. So if you've drank a gallon of water in a day and not peed it all out, it's going to make a difference in your weight.

Also, they blow your abdomen up with gas during the surgery so they can work around without hurting you and bumping in to other stuff. That counts for a little bit as well.

And of course your "monthly visitor" can make you retain water and gain weight. I usually gain between five and ten pounds during that time. All of it from bloating or water retention.

Keep your head up my friend. The band works. If it works for me it will work for anyone. I got banded on June 16th, weighing 247, and as of right now I weigh 207. It's a great blessing. Just remember all the things that are someatimes catalysts of gaining weight that have nothing to do with food.< /span>

Hi:

I gained 9 pounds in the first 3 days post-op. It's just Fluid retention. I think it was day 5 or 6 when I started peeing like a sun of a gun. I dropped five pounds in one day because the Fluid finally left. I was surprised with the weight gain, but my doctor told me it was very normal.

As long as you follow the band rules you'll start to lose and keep losing.

Best wishes to you newbie.

I love my band and my new flat tummy.

Sue

They LOAD you with IV fluids during the procedure and the internal inflammation (swelling) from the trauma is the body holding onto Fluid in areas that are healing. A gallon of Water weighs 8 pounds and they do hang those big IV fluid bags...it will take a while to heal for the body to get back to normal fluid levels!!

Don't worry to much with the scale right now. I came home 13 lbs heavier then i went in. It's only because they load you full of fliuds.

I Feel for you. I went into the hospital weighing 229 on a Monday, got home on Wednesday and I had gained 16lbs!! Yes! I said 16lbs!....All I had was maybe 3-4 SF popsicles and Water. Someone said it was probably the fluids and the swelling. Two weeks later yesterday and I am now at 226. Still aggravated about the wt gain, but at least its gone! I hope it stays that way!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
