Hello everyone,

I'm so glad to have found this site. I am hoping to get lap banded soon as I am beginning to have health issues caused by my weight - high blood pressure, pre-diabetic. I've been one of those yo-yo dieters - with the scales continuously creeping up. At 45 yrs old, 5'9", 300#, I've decided its time to get this under control.

My medical insurance is changing from Anthem to United Healthcare at year end, so I'm looking to have the surgery in 2010. Gastic bybass (and presumably Lap band) was a covered surgery under the Anthem policy to I'm hopeful that it will be under the new one as well.

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading the various threads & learning more about this life changing surgery. Thanks to all for sharing so much!

Welcome! What part of Ohio are you from? I'm from Fairborn, Wright Patterson Air Force Base area. If you're close, I have a wonderful surgeon to recommend!

Howdy! I live in Newark (about 45 minutes east of Columbus). I had my band placed on 6-8-09 in Cincinnati by Dr. Curry. I would recommend Dr. Curry in a heartbeat (especially if you have to self-pay). Good luck with your journey

Dont assume about the insurance coverage... my family owns an insurance agency and i dont believe united covers it.. call and ask... its excluded out of my most policys... i know i am on bcbs of fl and its excluded.. luckily i was able to find a doc to do it much cheaper then most and was able to come up with the funds... check it out first before you switch companies...

Hi, I'm from Ohio also and I'm hoping to get banded in 2010 as well. I'm currently going to OSU for my insurance required nutrition classes.

I live on the Ohio River near Steubenville...very close to Wheeling, WV. I'm pretty new on this site, and this is only my 2nd post, but I love to read the threads...very helpful info!

Lots of Luck!

~Nikki

Not assuming at all, but am trying to be hopeful. My employer is switching companies in 2010 - I really don't have a choice about it. If I want health insurance - United Health Care is my only option. I'm hopeful as my employer's plan is a self insured one - And that since it was a covered surgery under the 2009 plan, it will remain one in 2010. (again, being hopeful). And believe me, I'll be burning up the phone lines to customer service getting all the specifics as soon as we roll over to the new policy. Otherwise, I'll be a self payer as well.

I have UHC mines is a PPO. I live in Calif though I had my surgery in April 09. My surgery was covered and I was not required to have a 6 months supervised weight program. Hopefully your plan will cover your surgery. Good luck to you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
