Hello all, I was just banded on 10/3 and started my soft food diet this weekend. I am having a hard time with it. Everything I swallow it seems I can feel going down and it is not a pleasant feeling. I chew like crazy but I almost want to go back to liquids because this feeling is awful. I have even gotten stuck a few times and the sheer desperation of it is terrible. Do you all experience this? Will it go away?? Any suggestions??

I would stay on liquids, and call your doctor. You may have been given a fill during surgery which has made you too tight. Maybe there's still residual swelling, but it seems kind of long for that. I know I had no trouble going to mushies at two weeks, but it could be a matter of how quickly each of us heals. I wouldn't continue with the soft foods until you talk to your doctor though.

Definitely contact your surgeon and let them know how you’re feeling. Likely they will tell you to go back on liquids. In fact I wasn’t even told I can eat soft foods until a month out so that’s a bit fast.

However I’m not a doctor so I cannot give you good sound advice on what you should do, either than talking to your professional.

Best wishes!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
