fruit in the mushy stage

Recommended Posts

Any fruit I can eat besides bananas? Can I just mush up any fruit? I'm craving some canned pineapple - can I mush that up? Will pineapple get stuck? What fruit goes down easiest (besides bananas)?

Hi Laura,

If you're going to have fruit at this point, you should probably stick with canned or sauced fruit (like canned peaches or applesauce). pineapple is fibrous, even if it's canned, and I know I've had a hard time with it. Fruit is problematic even now, I'm a little sorry to say--it takes a remarkably small amount to fill be up for a long time.

Good luck, and whatever you try, take it slow!

Bananas do NOT go down easy for me, be careful, I would go with the canned peaches if anything during the mushy phase, mixed with cottage cheese...Mmm yummy

If you want to add a little variety to your bananas (I got tired of bananas too) add a little fat free whipped cream to it and it makes it seem like you are having a little sundae and you can even add a little chocolate or strawberry Syrup (Nestle Quik) and it makes it better! I still eat the applesauce but you can also try some of the flavored sauce to add a little variety to that too! And one of the best things that I found that goes down easy is watermelon. I would eat that in the beginning too. Hope this helps!

Bananas stick for me too - they always give me a big lump in the chest, so I was thinking they might be hard to eat after. Same with eggs, particularly hard boiled eggs.

I also have trouble with fruit. The worst pb'ing I ever had was after trying to eat a plum. I can't eat banana's anymore either. I do ok with applesauce, but even watermelon gave me the chest lump. I haven't tried canned peaches, but love cottage cheese so I'm gonna try that today. It does sound good! I would think any of the fibrous fruits would be problematic.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
