Is it possible to slip your band...

Recommended Posts

from coughing? I have been sick since Saturday, woke up w/a bad cough, was running a fever until yesterday (Tues) afternoon. I have been paranoid of slipping my band from coughing so much... does anyone know if it's possible to slip your band from coughing? I was banded on May 19, 2009. I am already scheduled to see my surgeon for a fill next week, but I have been really worried about this. Thanks for any insight.....

I'm sorry you're sick, and I hope you're feeling better soon. I've never heard any warning that coughing from an illness can cause a slip. I'd give a call into my doctor if it were me, just for the extra reassurance, and to ask if they'd call a prescription in for you if there's any chance that you could cause damage.

My surgeon had me call my PCP b/c of "flu like" symptoms right after surgery. He said the band had not time to heal and he didn't want me coughing a lot. My PCP sent me some meds and in a few days I was much better.

I would assume that if your band is healed, that coughing wouldn't hurt it but it's always safer to call your surgeon. Better to be safe than sorry.

I do hope you begin to feel better soon. It's a bummer to get sick this early in the cold/flu season.

Ok.. I just spoke w/my surgeon's nurse and she said that there is no concern about slipping my band from coughing... I feel much better now.. whew! LOL I was VERY paranoid about that....

Thanks for everyone's responses....

I too, was coughing, and my surgeon's nurse told me that they sew the stomach around the band, so there is very little chance of slippage.

Additionally if you have pain meds with hydrocodone in them (like Vicodin, Lortab, etc), it also acts as a cough supressant in addition to a pain reliever.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
