2-3 weeks post op and gained weight

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I had my surgery on sept 1st... My doc moved me to soft foods, and haven't lost any weight... in fact I gained 4 pounds... I feel like I am a failure :blushing:...

well, to start with the first 2 weeks I was so swollen, I couldn't get anything down, not much Water, no Protein shakes at all. Then I started eating nonfat Dannon plain yogurt and the swelling went away 2 days later. Now I'm on soft foods and I feel like I don't have any control. I gained weight!

I eat 3 meals a day, no snacking even though they say to eat 6 mini meals a day during this stage... for instance for Breakfast I would have a light babybel cheese with 4 kashi tlc crackers or have a Protein shake, lunch I have a cup of nonfat cottage cheese, and for dinner I would have 2 pieces of gefilte fish (quick and easy)

yesterday I went to the renaissance faire and had a scoop of muscle milk Cookies and cream with 2 cups of nonfat milk for Breakfast, and for lunch had a bread bowl of brocolli and cheese Soup minus the bread, and a bite of my husbands turkey leg, and for dinner we went to applebees for and i had a whole french onion Soup and about 5 tbs of loaded mashed...i got on the scale and gained 2 extra pounds... yesterday, i had no control and didnt feel full at all...

now, im depressed:frown: and don't know what to do, where to begin... I feel like Im the only one in this situation and I'm not even 3 weeks out... I see other people posting that they are losing weight, i need some motivation and some tips, help!?????

You are making some high calorie choices, but never fear you will catch on. This is a marathon of learning not a sprint. I gained over 12 pounds between banding and first restriction, but after that it was easier to stick to the rules. This healing period is often referred to as "Bandster Hell" and there is a reason for the name. You are not alone. Make sure you are drinking your fluids and exercising and the rest will come.

Best wishes,

Mimi

Funny I was just going to post a thread on this!

I haven't made high calorie choices and have gained around 2-3 lbs overnight from going from liquids to mushies. I was banded on 9/11 and since aug 28th when I was on (Protein only) liquids I lost 21 lbs which I figured was more than I should have even if I am eating 300-600 cals a day.

A few observations - my first mushy was yogurt (greek thick no fat) and right away the gas settled down (which means that more comfort means more room for hunger). But I am feeling much more normal now thank goodness.

I did have 2 scrambled eggs this morning with an oz of cheese done on the griddle - ie very little fat - about a teaspoon.

Once you do get food into the mix its harder to not think about food. The liquid keeps you focused food starts being distracted but hey we need to learn to live with that aspect.

I am going to have flaked lemon sole later.

I was banded in May and also gained 4-5 pounds in the couple weeks following.

Don't sweat it. This isn't about this short term thing - this is a marathon. Let yourself HEAL first. THEN do the work, make the right choices, etc. If you do that, it will come off. While you're just out of surgery, you are limited on what you can eat and how much you can move. This is OK - let yourself heal. In a few months, if you're making bad choices, not moving, and you gain, then you can kick yourself (not the band, yourself). But for now? Go easy on it, maybe even avoid the scale if this sort of thing sets you back...

Thank you everyone for your support, I was very emotional this morning! So today i ate 2 soft boiled eggs with .5 an ounce of light feta... and i had about 8 ounces of baked Bass fish and a cucumber with a tablespoon of sour cream... I am noticing that I am also eating fast, but how do you not when the food is already mushy/soft? Im going to push myself harder into going to the gym...mon, tues, wed and thurs and sun... probably walk on the treadmill for an hour at a high incline each of those days, unless there are other suggestions????

what really helps is if people can post their meal plans so i can get an idea of what i can do...Im not that creative...

Hi all. I was just banded on Sept 4th and so far so good. I can not complain. Do beat yourself up about the gain. Like others have said this is a Marathon no a sprint. My Dr. says it is going to take me 2 years to loose 100 pounds.

The main thing that I am doing to keep myself in check is drinking Water. If you are not try really hard to get in your 64 oz of Water a day. I am not there yet but close. Don't forget to take your Vitamins and Calcium twice a day also. The Viactiv Calcium is a really nice treat to have twice a day with its chocolate taste and Tootsie roll feel. I even find it satisfying for a night snack.

The other thing that my Dr told me is to make sure i stick with the 4 oz or less for each meal so I do not stretch the pouch. Also to make sure that I am picking foods that are less than 60 cal per serving.

Protein is so important. We are suppose to get 70 grams of Protein a day. I am not there yet but trying. Someone on Obestiyhelp.com <another great site> suggested that I get a Isopure powder that has no taste to sprinkle on everything to supplement protein.

Let me leave you with this. You are not alone. We are all here for you. We all know what you are going through being we have been there. If you ever need to talk or anything add me to your friends list. We can do this together.

8:30 Breakfast: 1 egg scrabbled with a little bit of FF milk to make it moist.

12:30 Lunch: My Dr has Protein Soups that i bought at his office. I made it and added pastina to it. I had 1/4 cup for lunch.

4:00 Snack: Sargento reduced fat sharp cheddar cheese stick. 60 cal and 6 grams Protein.< /p>

7:00 Dinner: 1 oz of mashed potato's and 3 oz of Talia. As you probably know i am doing 1 oz in measurements and weights of everything i eat.

I have had also

48 oz of Water today so far.

I am just starting mushies. How much are you all eating? My instructions say 1/2 cup to 1 cup strive for 2-3 meals a day. I am able to do a cup w/o a problem but I am trying to slow down my eating (ie maybe i would be full w/ less).

Today I had the following

B:2 scrambled eggs 1 oz cheese (my highest fat entree)

lunch - 1 cup of fork flaked sole made w/ a pat of butter and lemon

dinner - the rest of that sole 1/2 w/ 1/2 cup potato leek Soup blended (that was good!)

Sounds good. for myself I do Protein shakes. But i tend to do them for a snack if i need one because i find that an hour and a half after i have it i am hungry. but when i do the shakes i do 2 oz for a snack and 4 oz for a Meal Replacement. In my mornings I have 1 large egg scrambled with a little milk to moisten it. I don't cook it dry just fluffy. I measure the cooked egg in a 1/2 cup measuring cup to make sure that i am not going over the 4 oz. That holds me 3 to 4 hours.

Sounds like you have a great day ahead of you tomorrow.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
