Ok when I comes to pain I have a high tolerance for it, usually I am up for ANYTHING and I consider myself a strong person. I have my psychological evaluation tomorrow and after that I will get a call to tell me when I go in for surgery!:) I am so excited but to be honest I am totally and completely terrified. I know the chance of dying is slim but I am really scared I will be the one who will (cause honestly that’s my luck lol). Is there any way to get rid of this feeling? My mother assures me I’m young healthy and ill be alright, though I feel better when she says that I’m still scared. I am 20 years old, I am 5’5 and weigh 254 pounds, I have no health problems except slight high blood pressure but its not bad. Am I the only one that’s so scared of the actual surgery? Don’t get me wrong I am kinda afraid for after the surgery but I’m confident I could lose the weigh I need. Just the whole having surgery is kinda scary to me.:(

I started out close to the same size but add 28 years on top of it, I am 48. I also have a slight blood pressure problem and have had no problems. I have extreme anxiety that I take meds for. So I know about being scared. I wanted this so bad that I would have gone to the hospital by myself to get it done and rode the bus home if I had to. I wanted it!!

When I was in the prep room before surgery I had to wait about 30 minutes and thought I was going to have a panic attack. I did my breathing techniques and prayed to try to relax myself. I had not drank anything since midnight the night before and I had to get out of bed 3 times in that 30 minutes and have a nurse carry my IV to the restroom. I was pretty scared. So when the Dr. came in to check on me I told him my anxiety was really high so they gave me a litlle something in my IV to help and it did. Then I was fine when they wheeled me into the Surgery room and then with in a minute I was out and woke up in the recovery room realized what I had just been through and started having a panic attack so they instantly gave me something and it calmed me right down.

I did not say all this to scare you, but so you can see even if you are very, very scared and full of anxiety that they will take care of you. I would do it again in a minute. I think it is one of the best things I ever did, wish I would have done it when I was your age.

Hi Blazed,

I was very scared and not sure if this is what I should be doing right up until I was on the operating table!! lol At one point in the pre op room I almost got up and went home. Thankfully...I expressed my anxiety and the nurse taking care of me just stood next to me and held my hand. She started talking about her kids, my kids her trip to Hawaii etc. The next thing I know I was waking up in recovery.

I was scared, but it has been the best thing I ever did and would do it again in a heartbeat! Being scared is normal no matter what kind of surgery you are having. Hang in there!

123crod- Thank you so much for your reply it made me feel alot better and you didnt scare me. I am glad that I am not the only one that has ever been this nervous. Knowing others are/have been just as nervous as I am is a comforting thought and I really appreciate it.

Grandma26-Thats great I hope that there will be kind people there to help me before my surgery. I have almost backed out at least 3 diffrent times but this is something I want to do. I appreciate your comment I really do. Today I feel a lot better I went to for my

Psychological evaluation and it turns out the psychologist I went to had the lap-band back in may. I was so relieved I went to him he helped me out a lot and made me feel at ease. I am so excited!

I was so so so scared before my surgery!! I had never had surgery before, and also was relatively healthy...except that I weighed 280 lbs!! But it went very smoothly and honestly was a very easy recovery. I am sure you will do great!! Good luck!

I don't think that feeling ever goes away. . . i've had 17 major surgeries in my life time. . . and every time i go I have that feeling of the "last" time. . . but I wake up each time and am here to repeat yet another surgery. . . it's very scary but it will be ok, it's human nature to be scared, i don't think it would be normal for someone to say, "Oh I'm just dandy, i'm not even nervous" that would not be right, so your feelings are very very normal. . . I hope that helps abit. . .

Hey there.

I would question the sanity of ANYONE who wasn't at least a little apprehensive about the idea of being operated on! It is a big deal however "minor" people say this surgery is.

What I can say from my experience is that I woke up an hour after they put me under and within a couple of days I was back up and able to go for long walks again. I could walk around the hospital (complete with drip on wheels!) within 2h of waking up! After almost 2 weeks I have next to no pain and have had great success in dropping medication dosages already.

I hope you keep positive and I wish you every success!

It's normal to be scared or nervous before surgery...especially if you've never had surgery or anesthesia before!

The operating room staff and pre-op nurses deal with this all the time and all you have to do it let them know you're nervous and they will help you through it!

I had my band done in August. It was awful waiting but it honestly was a breeze. No nausea, no pain, absolutely no complications. Ask them for a drug "cocktail" before surgery. You'll go into the operating room singing.

I just had the band put in yesterday. I am sore and the pain medication makes me sick. I am now afraid that I have done the wrong thing. I can't seem to stop crying. Has anyone else had this problem after surgery.

I have heard of people reacting this way after a general, irrespective of the operation. The pain does go away, and if you are finding that the medication causes you a problem speak with your doctor right away to get something else. I know codeine causes problems for many people just as an example.

Keep in mind the reasons that you went through this and keep those around you informed of what you are feeling. You can do it, but we all need support and reassurance from time to time.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
