Upper GI not so bad!!!

Recommended Posts

I had my upper GI done yesterday and i must say it wasnt that bad. Drinking down that yummy flavored barium wasnt as bad as i though it was going to be. It was funny really the doctor gave me 2 little cups one with the little gas fizzy pellets and one with some liquid. I joked with him are these "SHOTS" he giggled and said drink up. after that went down they had me stand in front of the flouroscope and drink down the barium he said just chug this down as fast as you can. So I did. they tilted the bed and had me lay down. Now this is were it gets strange the doc had me lay on my side and he grabbed a hold of my hip and rocked me back and forth to get the barium to coat all my tummy. OMG i couldnt stop laughing. It was like the tickel button had been pushed i apologized for the laughter but i just couldnt stop. I finally stoped giggling and they took some more shots while i was positioned on my sides. They also asked me to bear on down while i held my breath this was not terrible either. It was all done and over in about 15 mins start to finish.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
