Hiatal Hernia Repair and Lap Band Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi!!

I hope you guys can help me :)

I had a hiatal hernia repair and the Lap Band at the same time. I have read lots of people have the same thing done. Were your diets any different post op because of the hernia repair? Were you on liquids longer because of the hernia repair?

Thank you so much for all your help!!

I also had the hernia repaired and I was on two weeks liquids pre-op...two weeks liquids post-op, then two weeks of mushies then on to real food. Even though it was hard some days, most days were okay. You will get through it, just make sure to follow the diet and don't cheat. You will be on food before you know it and then you are not limited to what you can eat until you get really restricted (from what I hear...). I can eat anything still and have had two fills and am losing at a good pace. My first thing I ate after going on real food was a slice of pizza and it tasted soo good. I do eat healthy but there are times that I want what I want and I eat it. I have had no problems. I was banded on June 11th and have lost a total of 37 pounds so far.

I wonder how they repair it...and if it makes healing a little bit longer.

A friend who had a hiatal hernia repaired (but not lap band surgery) said they took a little bit up the very upper part of the stomach and "wrapped" it around the esophagus to get enough "bulk" to stitch the diaphram to so that the gap could be closed. A hiatal hernia is a gap in the space there the esophagus passes through the diagram and because the opening is too big, the stomach can push up through that space. Now, let me add that my friend isn't the best at communicating technical stuff, so that may indeed be Becky's version of what the doctor told her, LOL. But I'm sure it's close.

I too had a hernia repair and the lap-band. I'm still a little sore (I was banded on July 28th). A friend of mine who is banded(and has had several fills) says that you can't get pizza to go down. I would kill to get my hands on a piece. Will pizza go down for anyone else? I'm new at all of this. How do you guys get those cute little tickerfactory thingies to display on the board when you leave a message? Thanks all!

I also had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time... My diet post op has been only 4 days of liquids and then on to mushies. I do have to be on mushies for 2-3 weeks. Then I can start solids. I had my surgery Juky 28th and am almost pain free. I actually left the hospital almost pain free. I was worried because I was told by others on here that the pain after a hernia repair was horrible pain. But I feel great. I am 8 days post op and have lost 8 lbs since surgery. It is like a pound is coming off everyday. I know I shouldn't expect this in the future after I start solids but this is an amazing way to start my new life with the band.... Jennifer

I had my LB and Hernia repair May 2008. No difference in post op recovery time, diet etc at all.

I can eat anything as long as Im careful.

I had so many pre-op problems with reflux and aspirations I was excited to have the hernia done. Its the best thing that I ever did........even better than the band for me.

Dita, I can eat pizza but I have a problem with any soft bread so I eat the thin & crispy crust. Obviously, pizza isn't the healthiest thing you could eat so it's a treat but, YES, I can eat it. Don't let anybody tell you that you can't eat anything. Try it at home (so that if you do get stuck you're not sitting in a restaurant) and see. And remember that just because it doesn't work on Tuesday that doesn't mean it won't work on Saturday. Soft bread is the only thing I consistently have issues with. I tried plenty of times and gave up finally because I just didn't want to get stuck on it any more. But plenty of people do eat soft bread (as Restless Monkey and others will tell you). The thin crust does have fewer carbs simply because it's less volume than "regular" crust, and I know that some places offer whole wheat crust, too.

Hey... I had hiatal hernia repair (which I didn't know I had) and lapband last Friday, 7/31/09. I've had the center of the chest pain as well, but it is much better today (five days post-op). I have been sticking with the Clear Liquids plus a small glass of skim milk each day and able to keep it down. When you talk about shakes, my doc emphasized being sure they weren't the kind that gets thick. I use 4 oz skim milk, 4 oz cold Water, and the GNC 100% whey Protein. It mixes quickly and is very thin. I add a little crushed ice so it will still cold and then take small sips. It is low-carb and tastes good. My doc said only one of these per day, though. Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you all so much. This website has really helped me. I actually had never even thought of the thin crust. I was banded on the 28th and I have quite a bit of restriction in comparison to nothing. Another question too-does everyone completely avoid drinking altogether while eating? I have to sip while I eat. I know they say that fills the pouch and washes food out too quickly, but I almost feel like I'm gonna choke if I don't take a sip now and then....

Thanks...

I also had the Laps Band with Hiatal hernia repair August 12, 2009. I have had bad chest pain especially on my left side. Each time I take a deep breathe it really hurts. Today I am actually feeling better. I hope this means I'm on the road to recovery. Is it the Hiatal Hernea repair that causes so much pain?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
