perductive burping (not sure I spelled that right) The food will come back up but unlike throwing up you don't have the stomach acid in it. Slime-kinda like PB but it's not food just a very very slimey salava. Hope this helps. OH, you'll know it if it happens just remember chew chew chew and when your done chew. Good luck on your banding.:scared2:

Lisa, a PB is "productive burp". It's a pretty good description, but some people do think it's vomiting. It's not ... your stomach doesn't empty and there's no stomach acid involved at all. But what happens is, you take a bite that is too big, don't chew well enough (eat too fast) ... and the bite just makes it part way down your esophagus and gets stuck. Very uncomfortable feeling. And it just doesn't seem like it's going to move on. DON'T try to wash it down with liquid because if you do PB, all that liquid will come back up too. Usually accompanied by sliming .... lots of saliva and mucus which is essentially smoothing the way for that bite (or bites) to come back up. And come back up it will. Later, when you have more restriction, some foods may not work well for you. LOTS of people can eat anything (ask Restless Monkey), but for some of us, some things "don't work." For me, it's soft bread. So, I just don't eat it. No great loss.

Cut your food into bites about the size of a nickel and chew each bite well and this will greatly reduce the chance of getting stuck.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
