Dumping Syndrome is "a good thing"!

Recommended Posts

Well it's been almost six weeks since my RNY surgery and since then I've done pretty well but I'm human and haven't been perfect.

Partially due to my type 2 diabetes I've always been a sugar craver (chicken/egg thing) and having the lap band didn't help with that situation which is why I never lost weight. The sugary foods would slide right through my band no matter what restriction I had.

With the RNY most of my sugar cravings have gone but as I told a friend here at LBT I was dreading the fact that it was my daughter's bday today and I had this massive chocolate cake in my house!

Now like I said most of my sugar cravings have gone but I'm only human and that cake was staring me in the . So I tried a bit of the creamy parts that I knew I could possibly tolerate. It was a demonic cake  that had a layer of raspberry mousse, vanilla cheesecake, chocolate cake and then topped with a covering of chocolate ganache!

I ate some, 15 minutes later I was experiencing dumping syndrome for my very first time. I felt nauseous and thought I could just relieve that feeling with a pb but no such luck. Then the hot sweats began and the stomach was churning and it was just not pretty! It was bad enough to avoid this ever happening again, I hope!! But I am happy that it happened because I am far from perfect and so far with this surgury the weight is coming off and I still have a lot more to lose and do not want to go backwards like I did before!! Well better go, have to call an old priest and a young priest to give my refrigerator an exorcism:drool: Nancy,

Hi, Nancy!

yes, it is!

You might call it the Bypass's "natural restriction". It's not pleasant, but a few episodes of dumping and you'll likely never binge on sweets again.

I have not experienced the dumping that other people have. I have had two minor episodes. One was when i had a "smoothie" at a convention. I learned that all smoothies are NOT alike. I think I knew I was in for trouble when i saw them ladling that Syrup into the blender. I didn't get real sick, I just felt a little "off", very mildly naseous., and it didn't last long.

The second episode was at a party where I had some salad with some Ranch dressing. That was a little worse. I had to go out to my car and lay down for a few minutes. It may have been the high concentration of fat in the dressing, or something else entirely. As a test a few weeks later, i tried some ranch dressing at home, just a little bit, and i did notice an unsual reaction. So, no Ranch for me! I haven't investigated exaclty what the "offending ingredient" is, but it's there.

I will say that I have MUCH more latitude in what I can eat than other RNY patitnts, it seems. But, this surgery turns out in VERY individual ways, and there is no way to predict exactly what the outcome is going to be.

But, YES....it IS a good thing. It's keeps you in line, right?

HH

HH,

I need that extra help to keep me in line for sure!! I'm usually on my best behavior in public so I'm glad this incident happened at home. But I will try to be much better at home too. I think you're right it might have been the combo of high fat/high sugar. Take care, Nancy.

i just got back from lunch with my friend that had bypass surgery...i don't know what she ate that triggered her to dump...but i didn't see anything good about it...pretty scary that ur body reacts that way if u eat the wrong thing....

I don't find it scary at all and it's more like a signal my body telling me that I shouldn't eat something and also helps to avoid doing so in the future. Dumping is a term they use to cover a broad spectrum of symptoms like feeling light headed to having major stomach pains and some even vomit or have diarrhea. Everyone is different and I believe less than half the people who have RNY even experience some type of dumping syndrome. I was one of the lucky ones who does and many people who have RNY don't like it but don't hate it either if you know what I mean. Keeps us in check to a certain extent. I suppose you could call it a "tool". Nancy.

Nanook -

I have a question for you. I am 4 weeks out from the surgery. I quickly lost 17lbs in the first 3 weeks but am now not appearing to lose anything. Did this happen to you? I am not eating very much so I am praying that it is just my body adjusting and not that I am destined to find failure. I am so glad to have the band gone however, my insides feel so much better.

Momof2boys,

I'm a bit confused did you have your lap band removed? Did you revise to any other surgery? Let me know, Nancy.

Yes I revised. I had to get rid of the band and then I had the RNY. This occurred on August 25th. I seem to have hit the 3 week stall however and hope that the weight starts moving again.

:tongue2:

momof2boys,

I've kept track of my weight since my surgery and if I had a chart it would show that I stall right around ovulation till I get my period. This happens the same way for me every month. I lost much more the first month after my surgery and then much less since then but it's consistent just not every week due to my hormones/cycle. It is probably about 6 to 8 lbs a month for me now and I'm fine with that.

Having the surgery is a big shock to your system and to your lifestyle and takes a while to get things working. I didn't lose anything with the band so I was at my highest weight when I got RNY surgery. If you continue to stall or gain a significant amount call your bariatric group. Good luck and thanks for clearing this up for me I can have a really bad memory! Nancy.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
