Really - How much does it hurt ?

Recommended Posts

I don't want to minimize anyone's suffering ...

but, seriously, if you've had a baby, you can handle the lapband.

It hurt. I was not comfortable. I wouldn't wish for the pain. But I'd put up with a lot more to have lost the weight.

xoox

A little gas pain in my left shouldar. Other than that, minimal. Just rest a couple of days and remember not to lift anything heavy for 3 weeks.

The abdominal cavity is filled with CO2 during surgery to spread things apart and make the surgery easier. Sometimes that discommodes the diaphragm and it can be agitated and sore afterward. If it presses on the phrenic nerve that runs right by it you have what is called "referred" pain in your shoulder. It will lessen and resolve over time as the gas is absorbed by your body (Gas X or other drugs won't help it because it isn't in your digestive tract, it's in your abdominal cavity, unless your surgeon removes most/all of it) It felt, to me, kind of like what we call "a crick in my neck" but having my husband massage my shoulder would make mine quickly abate. Different people have it (if at all) to different degrees.

It depends on what kind of pain meds you get.

I would say 75% uncomfortable and 25% pain. It hurt. I just wanted to sleep through the first week. It was not fun. I did not have good pain killers. You would think Mexico would give you the good stuff, but no.

It, as all things, passes though.

I have a pretty high tolerance for pain & I have endured very serious pain - almost lost 3 fingers on left hand, ectopic pregnancy - tube burst & natural childbirth twice. With that said, I want to be prepared. I know everyone is different, but really, how bad was it?:cursing:

Thanks!

Hi there!

Well, the worst pain I felt after surgery was when I woke up and for some reason my left collar bone hurt. Other than that I used 6 mg of morphine right after surgery and that was just because I had some discomfort around my diaphragm that would have been relieved by burping. Other than that I never picked up my liquid Vicodin and I didn't even use the liquid Tylenol after I got home. I really couldn't believe how easy this surgery was. My C-section was more painful that this. I am almost 2 weeks postop and feeling great!

But, I think pain is just different for different people.

Good luck to you!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
