Should you only eat when you get hungry?

Recommended Posts

Do you think that eating while you are not hungry is better than eating while you are hungry?

I have not been feeling the urge to eat lately, and i have been loosing weight a lot! but im never hungry, i just eat to eat because im either bored at work or afraid to die from empty stomach LOL

Should we eat when we are hungry or not??

Your body needs a certain number of calories to function everyday, whether you want to eat or not. If you decide not to eat at all or only eat rarely, you could start causing yourself problems. Don't drop below the recommended calorie intake your doctor recommends. I hear for most people on the board, it's about 1200 to 1500.

I dont believe in eating if you're truly not hungry. Sometimes when I have a late Breakfast, I'm very much NOT hungry for lunch, so I skip it. I might have a small snack later in the afternoon. Some days are short and I just dont need 3 meals.

Regardless of the fact that you shouldnt starve to lose weight i dont believe forcing food you dont want down is a healthy or rational way to treat food.< /p>

But by the same token, you do need to eat enough to be nourished and healthy. I'm talking about once in a while. If you're always very unhungry, I 'd consider that you may be a bit tight.

It was one of the things I asked my surgeon about. Her advice was not to eat if you aren't hungry. I am the same as RM sometimes I am busy and don't even think about lunch. I usually just have an early dinner and don't eat the rest of the night. I don't put the calories in just to put them in. I still lose weight.

The only thing I make sure I eat is Breakfast. Mainly because it's the most important meal of the day lol. Other than that, if I'm not hungry or a little peckish during lunch time I just have a bite or two and know that I'm fine with that even though I'm not full. Then by the time dinner comes around at 6 I'm usually hungry so then I eat

I'm doing perfectly fine with about 400-600 calories, with enough energy to walk 3 miles without being wiped.

Keep in mind that as long as your nutrition including Protein is kept up, your calories should come from your stored body fat. Follow your surgeon's recommendations, but don't worry about "to little" calories -- only too little nutrients. Conversely, don't feel the need to boost your food intake if your nutritional requirements are already met.

I think first off you should NEVER eat just because you are bored! So easy to do, but so not a good habit!

My doc says to eat at the same 3 times each day (he's got a no Snacks rule, and considering I was a night time grazer, I am trying mightily to follow his advice) you can "train yourself" (like you do a pet! LOL) to be hungry ONLY at those times. It seems to be working pretty well for me so far.

I think it depends on each individual; some do better eating only when hungry, some do better with a regimen.

The problem with skipping meals is the tendency some have to think "well I skipped breakfast and lunch so it's ok if I eat blah blah blah NOW!" but not all do that.

I would love to be able to eat at the same 3 times a day and not be hungry inbetween. Hopefully after a couple of fills the not hungry inbetween will happen.

However with my job it is impossible to schedule eating times and no I'm not just making excuses. I'm a trainer and depending on the course and the client the times can vary widely.

Its good if I am doing a full day course as then I can normally have a break and lunch somewhere between 12 - 12.30. There are some courses that run from 10 - 2. these play havoc with lunch as by the time I'm finished I'm normally starving. Then probably the worst are the ones that run from approx 3.30 - 6.30 or 7. Especially as often I have an 60 - 90 min drive home. By the time I get home I am tired and starving! I don't mind taking food with me for lunch as there are lots of things that are easy to pack and eat but its difficult at dinner time as I want to be able to eat a "proper" meal. Also a lot of these late courses are at schools and they just want to get out and lock up as soon as the course is finished.

Eating cold food in my car in the dark really doesn't appeal.

Still trying to work out the best thing to do on days like these!

I hear you, elcee. When I was in school there literally were not 2 days (except Sat and Sun) where I COULD eat 3 meals at the same time each day.

That is harder than it sounds, isn't it? Right now I'm good w/lunch and supper. Breakfast is still a no-go...

It is taking an effort but I think it will be worth it. However I totally hear you; sometimes what we want to do and what we can do are two very different things!

I wish I had your problem. I have been there before, though, and it was just a phase for me. Now I am back to being hungry all the time. I was just at the doc and because I lost 15 lbs from my last visit a month ago, she wouldn't give me a fill. I was ok with it then, but now that I am having trouble controlling my portions, I want a fill. I know the more you eat, the hungrier you get, and I am sure it is because I have been eating more lately.

That being said, be careful. When I wasn't hungry (and you might not admit this to yourself) I was on a power trip. I loved not being hungry and didn't eat unless I was. After a while, I started to feel it not so good, and after bloodwork found I was deficient in vitD. I was loosing energy and just not right. Eventually I found a good place where I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner, just didn't snack, and if I didn't want to or have time for a meal, I would eat a Meal Replacement bar or have a Protein shake. So if you aren't hungry, that is fine, but find a way to give your body what it needs. OK?

I had the same problem...never hungry (which I still don't see as a problem) and then the acid reflux. I was too tight. I went today, and they took .4 cc out of my band. I feel so much better. I wish I had done it sooner. I was miserable for a month.

Even at two years out I have a problem if I don't eat every 4 hours. What happens for me is that if I go too long I pb and slime with the food that I do eat. Because of this, I usually have a healthy late afternoon snack of yogurt or nuts or fruit to hold me over until supper.

I love my band and my new flat tummy!

Sue

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
