Active PreOPers dealing with the PreOP diet...Recipe for Fail?

Recommended Posts

I just started the preop diet and I am feeling really low in energy and hungry. Any advice on how to keep going when you can't slow down? I am a medical student on a busy rotation, which means I stand and run around for more than 10 hours a day.I eat greater than 60 grams of Protein a day. I will be on vacation after surgery, but getting there is turning out to be harder than expected

Surgery July 22.

I know you asked for those who are currently pre-op to answer, but I'm only three weeks out from surgery, so I'm close

Every surgeon's diet is different. What does yours want you to do? I think we can offer more assistance with a few more details!

It's also pretty common for people to feel lousy for the first few days of the pre-op diet, but generally people feel better on day three or four. It's hard to slog through at first, but it gets better.

My preop diet is not so bad. A lot of Soups, shakes, cottage cheese, high Protein stuff, etc. When I have a day off and not doing as much, the diet is tolerable. However when Im working, I just feel so drained. I esentially eat Protein Bars between patients. You're right, maybe it will just take getting use to...the calories are significantly less than what I'm used to.

staying strong...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
