Anyone have bad breath problems after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have never had chronic bad breath, but since my surgery (6/24), I have been plagued with the problem.:) I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and will it go away?

I am flossing, brushing and rinsing as normal, and have added extra to my routine!

Just the other day my husband told me that the day before I had had really bad breath. (Why didn't he just tell me then?) He said it was different than any other bad breath smell and he wondered if it was from all the milk-based Protein Shakes I'd been drinking. Who knows? I'm interested to see what other people have to say.

Bad breath in the low/no-carb sect is often caused by certain chemicals that are released in the breath as the body burns fat. They are called ketones, and entering into a fat-burning state of ketosis is the hallmark of a low-carb diet. So the good news is that if your breath stinks, you're probably doing a good job of sticking to that low-carb diet.

Thanks for the info. I have heard that a high-protein/low-carb diet can cause bad breath! Yuck. I guess I need to find a way to deal with THAT now!

It's nice to know that others share your experience. I to noticed a change in my breath while during the liquid phase. Most notably after a Protein Shake. Thanks for letting me know I was buring fat!

I have been having bad breath too. I hate it. I'm single, I can't have bad breath. I use to be able to eat garlic and be fresh still. I hope this doesn't last even though it does mean we're burning fat.

Bariatric Advantage - Devrom (100 Count)

Devrom (100 Count)

I saw this product on bariaticadvantage.com

I haven't tried it, but it may help. I've thought about ordering it, myself. But, I'm a chronic gum chewer, so that keeps my breath under control.

i have had this same struggle since surgery. I talked to my dentist about this at my last check up and she recommended Breath RX mouthwash -- it's expensive but it is a non-alcohol based mouthwash (which dries out your mouth and promotes bad breath) -- here is info from the website: BreathRx Anti-Bacterial Mouth Rinse is alcohol free and sugar free. It contains Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC) and ZYTEX®, our secret weapon in the fight against bad breath. CPC's know anti-bacterial properties kill the bacteria that lead to bad breath odors, then ZYTEX neutralizes their resulting odors. -- it has really helped me.

I will have to try that! Can you buy it anywhere -- Walmart or Walgreens?

Luckily I live alone & am not yet back at work. My breath is now far worse than pre-surgery shake diet..so bad I can notice it myself! I also need charcoal tablets..vulgar I know, but that end has changed too.

Gosh Aivey... I know. My breath is horrible. I have been told I have "Atkins breath". I am in ketosis, burning fat not carbs. That's great but I stink. I am a high school teacher. I will have to resolve this before late August when school starts. My students wll have no mercy on me and my bad breath LOL

Ok now I am worried, my surgery date is 7/14/09. I will only be off work for one week. I work in customer services and cannot have bad breath:scared2:! I am going to order the Devrom from Amazon today. I have seen Breathe Rx at Sephora, so I will get that as well. I hope one or both works for me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
