I was just wondering, does anyone know what the average weight loss is for the first year after being banded? My surgeon has told me, but it was before I have my band placed and I don't remember what he said it was. I am drawing very close to my 1 year mark and was just wondering where I fall in with the average.

Average WL with the band is 1-2 pounds a week.

As I understand it, the average lap band patient loses 50% of their excess body weight within the first year.

I'd recheck my source if I were you...I don't think that's exactly correct; it's a little high. What I've read and been told is that 3 years out people with the lap band lose 35-55% OF their excess; so that if you needed to lose 100 pounds you'd be down 35-55 pounds at 3 years out. Not 1 year. HOWEVER..that's an AVERAGE. Individual results vary.

I thought it was expressed as a percentage of what you needed to lose, that makes sense. 50% is the figure I remembered. I'm sure there are other factors, I was only going from a BMI of 37. I would think a person started 40 and above would have a smaller percentage in that time, but I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
