When does the food intolerance start?

Recommended Posts

I am approximately 6 weeks post-op and have not had my first fill yet. Since beginning "real" food I have not found food that is intolerable. So far I can eat anything. I've never felt "stuck" and bread and other foods that other people seem to have problems with go down for me with ease.

Is this because I have no saline in my band yet? Can I expect the food intolerances to start after my first fill? When did you have your first "stuck" experience?

Could be because you're not restricted at all. But I was banded in January and haven't had anything stick or come back to haunt me. I feel like I've posted this a jajillion times, but I keep doing to to tell people that it's not inevitable that you get stuck or throw up.

I wish you luck

Hi. I did not have any problems with food getting stuck/PBing until I had good restriction. After my third fill, I found some foods that wanted to come up instead of going down. There are times of the day when I have better luck with certain foods, and then there are some foods that I just can't eat - no matter where, no matter when, no matter how, no matter what. It is a LOT of trial and error. My band is a moody thing and I am sometimes surprised at what I can eat - both good and bad. As I'm sure you've read - the foods that people can tolerate, or can't eat, are all different. Once you get restriction, you will figure out what your band likes and what it doesn't like. Good luck to you!!! Becky

Hi,

I am almost at the 9 month point and I have not had a fill! But, in the last week, I have had some problems with food getting stuck/PBing. Has this happened to anyone else? Barb

Do you drink and eat at the same time? I heard that makes the food go down easier, but it's also cheating. I was told to eat first and drink about 30 minutes after..

jessi - for me, the two foods that I CAN NOT eat are rice and fish. I can eat canned tuna, but not grilled or any other fish that is in a filet or what I call 'real fish' :tongue_smilie:. One bite and i'm so stuck that i PB! Rice I understand because it continues to swell even after chewing/swallowing. But fish i never have understood. You may find as time goes on that certain foods may stick, but you may not.

Becky, you are so right! LOTS & LOTS of trial and error!

I've received lots of guidance and warnings about not drinking while you eat. One experience I had explained why to me in a physical way: At a restaurant, had Water with my meal, and I love their bread... so I had 2 bites of bread and a bit of Water. The water pushed the bread down, but not through. It made it stick more! So be careful if you drink while you eat: it may help you get food down, but it may make the sticking worse.

I am on a plateau and cranky right now! Arghhh  But have Dr. appt this afternoon for another fill. Havent had one in 3 months and it's definitely time!

Good luck all!

I wait 1 hour after eating to drink and I do not have acid reflex. I can not eat bread, so I do not even try! I once tried drinking when I was stuck and that was the worst thing I could have done! I normally can eat most foods. Maybe, I am just changing. barb

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
