I made a big, expensive mistake!!!

Recommended Posts

I had to switch to a different doctor at the last minute and went with a doctor who charged me $3,500 for a "program fee". It is a total rip off, offers nothing, and has not been a good doctor or office. Beware of "program fees". Most of the people on lapbandtalk.com don't have this fee. I was banded 1 1/2 weeks ago. I'm in OC california

The first surgeon I looked into had a $3,700 program fee. I said, "Forget it". The surgeon I'm using now has NO program fees, NO consultation fees, and NO administrative fees.

He's awesome.

Hello Greta,

Do you mind me asking where you went? I have started the process with "Weight Loss Centers" also known as "Top Surgeons" out of Beverly Hills.

I had all pre-op procedures performed on 7-18-09. I have asked about money owed by me but told nothing was due from me yet. Can you explain the fee you were charged??

But now I am starting to feel that I need to change after all I am reading through this web-site.

Thank you!!

:smile2:

i went to the weight loss institute of AZ I paid some program fee's but it came with lifetime nutritional and Dr. advise. I personally found it to be worth it. The Weight Loss Institute has been awesome! No regrets!

I paid a program fee but it was not nearly as steep. $1,000 and it covered my Protein Powder which is yummy, before and after Vitamins, my visit with the psych doctor and it paid for my co-pay to them. They filed and dealt with everything to do with my insurance and they set up my hospital stay. All I had to do was show up. I thought it was definitely worth it.

Hi stacynclare I went to Milton Owens, Coastal Obesityin Orange county, a big advertiser on this website. Not many surgeons charged this ridiculous fee. Just ask them if they have a "program fee" that insurance doesn't cover. By the way, this fee did not include any pre-op stuff. It was for a program manual (he gave the the booklet by allergen that is free), insurance paperwork, access to websites (he told me to got to lapbandtalk.com), like I needed to pay $3500 to come here. My guy was a rip off and the staff isn't particularly good or knowledgeable. Just ask about any other fees. Good luck, feel free to ask me any other questions. I'm one month out. Surgery went fine, but not much restriction and I am starving. I thought it would be easier. Listen to what is said on this website. It can be tough going until you hit that sweet spot. I'm glad I did it, just waiting for a few more fills to make overeating a much easier nut to crack.

Greytz Yes, I would say that $1000 was worth it. I didn't get anything for this. I paid separately for physc, Vitamins, Protein powder. I came at the last minute and brought them all the paperwork. All they did was fax it to the insurance company. I'm not disputing program fees. This was an extra $3500 that insurance doesn't cover. Good luck

You bet Vipvernm - I was his 3rd patient of the morning. $3500 times 3. That didn't include what insurance paid him. NOt bad for a mornings work.

I am finding out some scary info on the center I have attended. One of the owner doctor has had his license revoked and the other (his brother) is on probation!

I am also getting info from Chapman Medical Center in Orange. I have a cousin who went there earlier this year for gastric bypass and he is completely satisfied.

I am so disappointed, I wanted to be banded before years end...I don't think I will be.

Thank you for your support!!

stacynclare - Chapman is where I went.

Be aware of this ridiculous fee. Make the drive up to Marina Del Rey. Jeremy Korman is great, now accepts BlueCross. If you don't have insurance all the doctors have a cash price. Find a doctor and staff that are helpful and you like. It's worth it. Once you do, it can be just weeks before you are in surgery. I think you'll do it!!!

I had a program fee but it was only 300 dollars or so. It covered my group teaching class (it was like a more in depth seminar with the doctor, for those of us getting close to surgery time), psych eval., nutritionist, and group nutrition classes, and gives me access to all of the support groups for life. The office staff is really great and knowledgeable and very easy to contact for any issues (including insurance, billing issues, appointment times/changes, etc.).

It was a low fee and I don't regret paying it. My doctor is really amazing. I emailed him last Saturday with a question and concern and he called me back 30 minutes after I sent the email. On a Saturday!! If some of the fee went to him, I think he deserves it so I'm okay with it. I actually bought him a present following my surgery. Because he's just that great haha. That type of care and concern is so unusual for doctors in big-city teaching hospitals.

Anyways, I think if someone had said there was a 3500.00 program fee, or even 1000.00 program fee I would have run the other way.

I had a large program fee - it includes 5 yrs of fills - preop food - nutristion at every visit - and my doc sits and talks with you.. Plus I don't have to pay any co-payments for the 5 yrs from surgery

The program fee is his way around insurance - They bill insurance $10,000 - they get paid $1,000.

Ya I could have gone to another doc - but I wanted a local doc - and I love my Doc - I'm lucky to have had the $$$ he is worth every penny...

I'm one week post op and I went to Dr. Korman in Marina Del Rey, CA and he's great!! His staff is really knowledgeable and he's a very talented surgeon. I work in the medical industry in LA and I did a lot of asking around before I decided on a surgeon.

I'm a cash pay, so I don't know if he has any special fees. Good Luck!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
