Gas Strips in addition to Protonix

Recommended Posts

Hi

I received a prescription for Protonix to take prior to surgery and morning of surgery, then 30 days after. I see many people are complaining about gas pains so should I purchase the gas strips or antacids in addition to the Protonix?

Thanks

Yes, they helped me alot. I take aciphex and took the gas X strips for a wk or 2 after surgery for gas pain. I don't need them any more, but they were a life saver for me at that time. Good luck with your surgery.

I didn't need Gas X...and they don't help at all with the pumped in gas that surgeons use to make the surgery easier. (And a GOOD surgeon can remove most of that; mine did)

Gas X (simethecone) just breaks gas up so you can burp it out, and I had NO trouble burping! LOL but it helps some people.

However I'd check with the doc to see if s/he recommends it first.

From an interaction/safety standpoint, yes, you can use both. (I'm a clinical pharmacist.) It's true that the simethicone won't help gas that's outside the GI tract, but it could ease other pressure. Good luck!

Yes, my surgeon is awesome, I have a single incision, and he pumped all of the gas out. Aside from the tenderness around the port/incision, I have been great. So I only take the protonix, I had my followup yesteday and they are ready to do a fill in July. I told them I would like to wait a couple of weeks, at least until the tenderness goes down.

I think you're smart to wait on the fill until you have healed. Good luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
