drinking through a straw

Recommended Posts

From what I've read the reason you should not drink through a straw is because it causes you to take in air which can be painful. Is this the only reason? Is there anyone who can drink from a straw without discomfort? I have not had my first fill yet and I can drink through a straw without a problem...I just want to know if that's going to change when I get a fill.

I usually drink without a straw but have no desire to drink at a restaurant without one. I've had 4 fills and haven't had any problems drinking with a straw.

I did not drink with one for about 2 months post op. Especially right after healing the last thing I needed was gas, and straws can cause/exacerbate that.

I use one now, though, because I have very sensitive teeth (gum disease).

thanks for the info. At home or work I don't usually use a straw but it grosses me out to think about not using one at a restaraunt.

i also use straws with no problem, but be cautious at 1st, just like a lot if things with the band, things that give some of us no problems at all give others big problems. best of luck!

I am 3 weeks out as of tomorrow. Until 2 days ago I stayed away from straws, but we went out to lunch and when I put the sweet n low in my tea then stirred I took my drink, just like always, no problems. Thank goodness, I dont' like not having straws.

I certainly understand this point of view. I've had two fills and no problems drinking that way. Water is Water, in my uneducated opinion, I can't see how the fill would affect it. However I probably had taking in a lot more air, but it hasn't bothered me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
