How are you getting your protein?

Recommended Posts

My Baylor College of Med Team wants me to intake 70-90 grams of Protein per day. I use the Unjury Protein Powder (love it) and I use Zone Perfect Protein Bars. That, of course, is in addition to food protein that I eat in a day.

I lost easily pre-op and post-op until first fill (-46)...then, suddenly, plateau. I've had three fills and have lost only 2 more pounds. I see saw back and forth between the same two pounds.

Are the protein bars a hidden enemy? I usually have 1 a day...and two shakes or 'chocolate milks' (8 oz 1 % milk and 1 scoop chocolate powder). I stay between 1100 and 1300 calories per day. Walking is my exercise of choice and I'm thrilled with results thus far. Normal b/p, normal blood sugar, off meds, etc...energy level soaring, but is it now just a matter of time once the body decides to let go. I have 7 cc's in an 11 cc Realize band. Thanks for your thoughts! I love my band!

I think people just worry too much about plateaus to be honest. Yes, we all love seeing lower numbers of the scale seemingly every day but the body just does not lose weight a day. If you are eating 1300 calories or less and exercising regularly, over time, the weight WILL come off.

Mixing things around a bit really does seem to help people, perhaps eat more or less for a few days, change your exercise.

To lose 100% of your excess weight, walking doesnt seem to be enough really, for most people. Eventually it needs to be stepped up and you need to work more intensely. Most of the really successful bandsters are pretty exercise mad and do intense things like spinning, running, and plenty of strength training. You know how much effort you're putting in now and you'll know yourself when you're fit enough and ready for more. I would highly encourage anyone to work ever harder with exercise if they want to see ALL their weight gone.

That's a lot of Protein supplements for a reasonable Protein goal. Really, you should ideally be able to eat at least 50 grams of it a day and that would mean you'd really only need either the bar or one shake with perhaps 2 scoops? Although its calories that count and if you're not going over, then you couldnt really say anything is the "enemy". Your body is probably just taking a breather.

Dr Ortiz, one of Mexico's leading WLS surgeons, in his book Lap Band for Life, stresses the importance of eating 3 solid meals a day - not just shakes & purees. He says its important to continue loosing weight. So, if you're not doing so already, it might be worth trying.

Good luck & hang in there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
