I am really missing veggies. I am in the soft food phase and have eaten refried Beans and cheddar for lunch and baked fish for dinner. This is only my 2nd day in this phase. I am trying not to eat more than 3 ozs at each meal. How in the world am I suppose to get me veggies in? I am afraid to overeat. My surgeon's advice is to eat Protein first and then move on to the sides. I am not hungry for the sides. HELP..any advice is welcome.

I am still in the liquid phase and I am getting stacks of veggies in. I have homemade veggie Soup at least twice a day.

My recommended plan at this point is :-

2 x Protein meals per day - custard,shakes,yogurt etc

2 x fruit - fruit juice

2 x vegies - Soups preferably with added lentils, pulses etc

Is it not possible for you to incorporate things like mashed carrot, mashed pumpkin, mashed cauliflower, broccoli etc into your mushy diet?

My recommended plan for when I get to mushies is

lunch and dinner = 40grams Protein + 1/2 cup mashed potato, pasta or legumes + 1/2 cup mashed vegies +1/4 cup puree fruit.

I suppose a lot of it is to do with different continents. The Dr's recommendations over here in Australia seem to be vastly different to in the US. In Aus the focus seems to be on balance whereas in the US it semms to be on protein first.

Also as time goes on your band will loosen up a bit, you are still swollen, so you have more restriction at this point than you will in a couple of weeks. Hang in there, also if you want to eat veggies, try cutting your meat to 1-2 oz and add in 1-2 oz of soft veggies.

This is where your mind comes into play. It's the mental game we play with ourselves.

My doctor calls it getting the mind in sync with your "new" "normal."

Prior to surgery, your "normal" was to eat a full plate of food, including the veggies. Now granted, you certainly probably miss the TASTE of them, but your "old" normal was to eat veggies.

Your "new" normal won't be like that. Your "new" normal may only include one or two bites of veggies.

We have to give ourselves "permission" to be okay with our "new" normal.

But, to get in the ones you really enjoy, that you want to make a part of your "new" normal, then follow some of the great suggestions above.

Thanks everyone. I should not complain. I am losing weight and I couldn't be happier about that. I found carrot juice today. It was spiked with papaya and mango juices. I had 4 ozs of that for Breakfast this morning. I can't indulge too often. It is loaded with calories. My doctor would not be happy knowing that.

Try to take your multivitium, that will help with getting in the other things you need.

I have learned that, if need be, I could mash, blend, puree, or pulverize anything into a mushy and with a bit of broth or gravy it turns out nice and tasty. Let your inner creativity fly!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
