Suggestions for Pureed Foods?

I'm a few days into the pureed/mushy food stage. My doctor has me in this stage for 2 weeks. His definition is anything I could eat if I didn't have teeth. Unfortunately, I don't like a lot of his suggestions -- oatmeal, grits, Cream of Wheat, pureed chicken or tuna salad, baby food, etc. So far the only thing I like is pureed egg salad and a few cream Soups that probably aren't the best choice. Oh, he also says no potatoes (my favorite).

Any suggestions? I'm hoping there's something out there that I haven't thought of yet :cursing:

mmm. I have a confession. I used to love my daughter's Baby Rice Cereal. I remember that I used to keep buying it after she was all grown up and sneak a bowl or two from time to time!

Hi Lisa,

I am 5 weeks out and have been on solids now for a couple of weeks. Here are some of the things that my doctor had on the "OK" list for the mushy stage:

Yogurt, FF/SF pudding, low-fat cheese (I like string cheese), LF cottage cheese, soft boiled potato or Pasta (1/4-1/2 cup), creamed Soups, scrambled egg, canned fruit (no sugar added), soft cooked veggies (no dry Beans, peas, onions, cabbage, broccoli or cauliflower).

A couple of other things I added, mostly at the end of the mushy stage:

this may seem weird, but I like it...I would make a can of chicken noodle Soup with the Water, and when it comes to a boil, pour in 1-2 beaten eggs. It is kind of like egg-drop soup with soft noodles. It is low-cal, low-fat if you eat only 1/2-1 cup, and I find it very filling.

I also love roasted zucchini & yellow squash, so one night, I cut some up and tossed it in garlic and olive oil, roasted it till very soft and then puree'd it in my blender. It was so yummy. And filling.

I also made a quiche out of the softened veggies, with egg, skim milk and LF cheese.

Those items, along with a variety of Protein Shakes are what I lived on during the soft/mushy stage. The 2 weeks goes by fast, so hang in there! Good Luck!!

In my mushy stage I actually ate whatever I made for my husband - just put it in my Magic Bullet type blender first. I had meatloaf, loose meats, meatballs, salmon, tuna salad... you name it I had it. If you need to you can add some beef broth, or any other liquid that would work to make it mushier. This is what my nutritionist suggested I do.

Make chicken fajitas for your family. Pass up the tortilla shell and give the chicken, peppers, and onions a turn or two in the blender. Have some mashed up refried Beans with it and you'll be in heaven!

I love spaghetti sauce with some ricotta cheese, refriend Beans with some LF sour cream, egg salad, oatmeal.

That's all I've liked so far. I tried pureeing chicken once, it wasn't pretty!

I did the same as bam bam, whatever I made for the family I blended for me, adding either chicken stock or beef stock to soften it up. I'd made a list of everything from tv that was driving me crazy during the 4 week liquid diet (2 weeks pre, 2 weeks post op), and made sure to blend it during the 2 week mushies. My favorites were home made chili w/turkey dog (darn Bush Baked Beans commercials), thai beef massaman with rice (it always comes with lots of sauce), and roasted chicken thighs and some mashed sweet potato on the side.

Good luck - and have fun, be creative with the mushy stage!

I bought Mrs. Grass chicken noodle Soup, it is in a box that you make yourself, then just did not add the noodles, much better than standard chicken broth. I also bought a variety of done up Soups at the deli of my local store, then took those and put them through my blender with extra broth if necessary, they were pretty good. Hang in there it does get better.

You can make some veggie Soup and either blend then strain or just strain the broth. You can find some great soup recipes that are easy to make, with flavors such as cumin, coriander, or other thai or indian flavors which helped bring me through. My favorites are Groundnut soup (Moosewood cookbook) and Mulligitawny.

I'm on day 2 post op so the liquid diet is not fun. chiken/beef broth does taste to good. I want something with flavor. Anyone have any suggestions?

This worked for me. I hope this helps. My family had baked chicken for dinner one evening and there were leftovers. The next day I opened a can of chicken broth and placed it in a pot with one piece of chicken. I added garlic powder and dried parsley. I let that simmer for 15-20 minutes. I then strained the broth. The broth was much more flavorful. I was able to get through the phase without any problems.:rolleyes: Remember to strain the broth before consuming. Any tiny chicken pieces must be discarded.

I know the broth stage is not the most exciting. One thing I would stress is that Broth and Stock are not the same, stock is much heartier tasting, so pick up some chicken or beef stock instead.

I also ate Miso Soup and Wonton soup... broths that is. That helped make some variety. That was the hardest stage!!! Hang tight, it will pass!

      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
