How did you change your eating schedule/habit from 3 meals a day to 4-5 small ones and possibly a snack?

I am finding since my 2nd fill I am eating more because it is time to eat and not that I am that "hungry". BUT.... I am drinking a LOT and not snacking as much as I did after the 1st fill... So I basically feel I am forcing myself to get in the nutrients/protein. I call it habit eating and not hungry eating... does this make sense?

Also riddle me this... Why is it that eggs for Breakfast dont fill me up anymore (they did pre-band) and yet now I can eat 1 granola bar or a oatmeal bar which is tiny tiny and feel stuffed? Don't get me wrong- I still love eggs it is just lately they dont "do the trick".....I wonder if its more habit eating than actual huger eating....

That's exactly the opposite of what I was told to do. My surgeon is a firm believer in 3 small meals a day, at SET times (he says we can train ourselves to get hungry at a certain time, just like we do our pets who get fed at the same time each day. If you doubt it, ask anyone who works a set schedule with a set meal time. On their days off, they'll get

hungry during that time) He is also adamant about NO Snacks.

Anyway 3 meals, no Snacks. Now that I have restriction it's a piece of cake. In fact I struggle to get the 3 meals in.

I was told the band doesn't work unless you stick to the 3 meal a day plan?

My surgeon too says Snacks or more frequent meals MAKE THE BAND FAIL! However....evidence says this is NOT true because many successful people on here do snack, and do not subscribe to the "three meal a day" plan.

I think once again this just shows how different we all are, how much the "pros" disagree, and how we all need to use the band in the way that best works FOR US.

If I had 4-5 small meals and a snack daily I'd be always hungry and not lose well....something to do with blood sugar and insulin resistance. I'm not diabetic (thank God) but do have metabolic syndrome. 3 meals concentrating on Protein give me the best energy level and control of my diet while some eating that way feel woozy and faint. We have to find what works for us then work it!

I didnt. Some days I eat Snacks if I'm hungry, many days I eat Snacks because I'm at home and its there (bad bad habit). Other days I'm busy and eat just 3 meals and other days I'm super busy and only eat 2 meals. To me, its real life, not a 'program' which for me is every bit as destined to fail as it ever was.

As for the eggs thing, well I've always found that with my band. Protein doesnt fill me up like they say it should - wholegrain carbs, fruit and vegetables DO. We dont get told to do Protein first here anyway, so I base my diet on wholegrain carbs and fruit with more moderate amounts of protein. I usually have some sort of Cereal or bread for breakfast, the carb hit gets my day started well (but I absolutely dont eat crappy carbs) and then I eat my protein at lunch and dinner. I dont usually eat any carbs at dinner, not intentionally but its more that sometime you have to get in lots of vegies and rice, Pasta or bread takes up all the room. At lunchtime I normally eat a sandwich or something. If i do that, the urge to snack doesnt strike, if I eat a protein/vegetable lunch such as a salad, I will need to eat again before dinner.

Overall though, as long as I eat right at the meal - protein, wholegrain and some fruit or vegies, I do best on 3 meals per day - snacking just sets me off and I tend to keep on eating. And I have huge trouble snacking on healthy foods, I simply cannot break the association between snacking and foods like chips, Cookies, etc.

it does work - i think it depends on your activity.

my surgeon prefers the 3 meals per day for those who live sedentary lives - who do little to no exercise.

that just doesn't cut it for active folks in my opinion.....for example this AM i had greek yogurt w/granola, then took a spin class/speed walked 20mins on the treadmill & burned over 750 calories. i could chew someones arm off while leaving if i don't pack some raw nuts/ostrich jerky/fruit .. before i can get home to eat a proper lunch.

on days i don't do any exercise - i eat much less; but on avg i have 3 meals & 1 or 2 Snacks.

my surgeon agrees with monkey's surgeon....no snacks....3 meals a day....based on my work schedule i do eat around the sametime everyday...on the weekends i tend to skip meals...which isnt good...i know...i know...but i run errands like crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i stay away from fast food for the most part...if i'm out and about and starving i will get chili from wendys....a chicken breast from el pollo loco or grilled chicken strips from jack in the box....snacking...will start up really bad habits 4 me....luckily i'm at my sweet spot and stay full for 4 to 5 hours....

My surgeon says 3 meals a day, no snacking. They also encourage you to eat only when you are truly hungry (learning to listen to what your body needs rather than supplying it with calories when it isn't askig for it) so I had to get away from eating simply because it was time to. This seems to work well for me - and luckily I work from home so my mealtime can vary if needed, although usually breakfast is the only one that does. Sometimes I'm hungry at 6:30, some days not til 9:00. lunch and dinner are pretty predictable.

It's amazing how different our surgeons are and their philosophies, yet for the most part everyone seems to do well. I guess they differ as much as our journeys do.

I am banded Monday, so sick of the pre op diet!!! My nutrionist told me because my blood sugar tends to drop easy I need to have small Snacks specially when I am active and working out. So far on the pre op diet, I haven't done to the tea,but I have lost 5lbs. I am excited about Monday and not looking forward to the pain and the one week of liquid protien diet, those shakes can be so borring I have to spice things up with my blender and fresh fruit. I think as long as you are losing what does snacks matter it is about health food. I was so tormented when my kids made brownies last night filling my house with that evil chocolate yummie smell. I didn't have one!!! Proud of my self! Now my worry is I have to work 5days later after surgery on my feet mabye up to 8hrs, I am excepting to be sore and tired. I hope to see the scale move down and down I don't care if it is only 5lbs a month it moving down, and when i get below 200 I will be so excited.

starting 243

surgery 6/8

now 237

My surgeon said only 3 small meals a day. I have started eating my breakfast and luch together (brunch) around noon. I eat my dinner around 4:30 or 5. Then I eat my last meal around 8 or 8:30. I was told NO Snacks between meals but to be honest, sometimes I feel hunger between my 1st and 2nd meal and at times, I will eat something like a Protein Bar and that helps satisfy me until dinner time rolls around.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
