What the heck is a clear liquid?

Recommended Posts

Clear Liquids are broth(note: the top ramen packages are sooo much better than reg broth)of course Water, Jello and some docs consider popsicles and Protein Shakes as clears. Hope this helps..

A clear liquid is just that...anything you can see through. That includes tea and coffee. Sprite is a no no on lap band post op because of the carbonation...which you probably know

Jello (you can see through it! and while it isn't really liquid have you ever tried chewing it? LOL)

and so on.

Protein Shakes aren't, creamed Soups aren't, lemonade isn't, (unless you can see through it...mine is kind of murky so it's a no no)

You can buy unflavored Protein Powder and put it into clear liquids. My doctor encouraged us to use crystal light even though you can't see through it. It's thin like a clear liquid and pretty much calorie free. I put my unflavored Protein powder in it.

Don't use Protein post op until your surgeon gives the ok. Mine was adamant about the first week...clear liquids ONLY no add ins, no protein powder, etc. Just follow your docs orders and you'll be fine! If he just says "clear liquid" and doesn't address protein, ASK him. It may or may not be ok for you! (I hope it is; the protein helps you feel better....but don't have it until you get the all clear!)

Another good clear liquid is Isopure. A lot of people don't like the taste of it but it has 40 grams of Protein in it per bottle. You can get it online or at GNC. My dr. also sells it. It comes in different flavors. If your doctor says you can have protein, it's a good way to get it.Protein keeps us from being hungry.

Thanks for your responses. Many of those items do not obviously seem to be "clear". Translucent, yes, but not clear. I will, of course, follow my doctor's directions - but your responses sound much more palatable than what I was imagining!

If you can read something through it, it's clear. I was doubtful about coffee but I could read through it when i poured it into a glass! Of course some surgeons say no caffeine so it may be moot. Good luck!

Actually sprite isnt even included in the clear fluids as it's a soft drink, and the bubbles will be extremely painful - usually it says to make it flat but who really likes flat soft drink? Some thing I had that have helped are also apple juice - tastes great but don't have it first up cuz it tends to dehydrate you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
