How much walking - 2days post op

Recommended Posts

The doctor told me I should walk & take it easy. What I want to know is how much walking should I be doing? 5mins or 10mins three time a day? what would you guys recommend? Obviously I should be comfortable but I want some sort of guideline.

The simple answer is to do as much walking as you can tolerate at this point. The more the better!! Good luck and congratulations!

My surgeon is extremely strict, yet conservative. He firmly believes that you need to walk 60 minutes per day, starting the day after surgery. He is fine if you walk really slow and he's also fine breaking it up into 6 10 minute walks. The day after surgery I walked 20 minutes 3 times...after 3 days, I was walking 30 minutes, twice...I get bored walking so every day I break it up into 2 30 minute walking sessions. I have had quite a bit of success since April 3rd (down 40 lbs). Walking will not hurt your band, it will only help you get that gas out of your system and jump start your success...

It's one thing to walk for exercise and another to prevent clots. I won't address the exercise...but for clots, while you are awake you need to get up and move a bit every 30-40 minutes. Walk around for at least 2-3 min. When in bed you probably should wear the elastic "ted" hose if they sent them home with you.

I really dont know that answer but from my experience I had my surgry on a Thursday out of the hospital on Friday and out yard sale hopping on Saturday. I didnt lift anything for about a week basicly walked everyday. I eel that as long as you arent to tired then walk. I had no pain after about 2 weeks.

I would just walk as much as you can handle. It was January/February when I had my surgery so it was much too cold, snowy and icy out so I just walked in my house for about 5 mins at a time.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
