Cramps and can't use NSAIDS pre-op :-(

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to be banded next Monday, on the 18th. I didn't have a pre-op diet, but the only thing I can't do is take any anti-inflamatory meds 7 days prior. Well unfortunately I got my period today and I always overdose on naproxen during the first day to control my terrible cramps. But now I can't, so I am just lying in bed moaning and using my laptop as a heating pad.

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

I'm going to recommend getting used to heating pads and tylenol - you should avoid NSAIDs after surgery, as well (they can play a role in erosion)

talk to your doctor about the NSAIDs. I also get really bad cramps and my doctor lets me take celebrex because it isn't so hard on your stomach. but for today probably the best thing you can do is use a heating pad and take tylenol.

Good point about the celebrex. I tend to forget that it is the "exception" because my insurance won't cover it unless the doctor specifies that I need it instead of traditional NSAIDs because it's easier on the stomach. For some reason, the PA wouldn't take that extra step for me.

If you do need to take NSAIDs, it good to take liquid (if it's available) and to pair it with something like Pepcid AC. And drink a lot of Water to wash it out of the pouch.

I have had horrible cramps forever, and when I don't have access to my regular painkillers, I grab some tylenol pm and just try to sleep through the cramps. I was taking a dose every 4 hours just to get through.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
