Has anyone been denied because you failed the mental health eval?

Recommended Posts

I had my mental health evaluation today. It was ok. She said she would go over her notes and send the result to my PCM. I answered all the questions honestly. What I want to know is, Can the psychologist stop you from getting the band? Can they be like "She didn't know enough about the band or stuff like that. They asked me how much I knew about the changes I will have to go through and about the sugery. She asked me about portions, what I can and can't eat. She asked me all kind of stuff. Thank Goodness I found this website because almost everything I learned was from here. I just hope everything goes good. I just have to keep my fingers crossed........ Jennifer

That is an excellent question. I have my eval on Monday. I thought that they would ask questions around weight loss etc to see if you are doing it for the right reasons, and are prepared for the life style changes. I was not expecting a quiz on how much I know about what I can eat etc.. It seems like people are different with what they can tolerate. Some can eat red meat, some not. Some can still have breads and some can not. So Im hoping its less about that are more about being prepared mentally for the changes....

When I talked to the Psychologist, I basically told her what I wanted... as in "to be healthy again", I told her I had researched the band for over a year and knew it was a "Life Changing" event. Basically they are looking to see that you know what you are going to do. As far as anyone being denied.... I know of many people who have got the Band, and have not heard of anyone getting denied. I am sure there have been a few though, but for really good reasons. you seem to know what you want and what it all entails! I am sure you will pass just fine!

Hello,

From my experience I think they are looking more at your mental status and not so much on your lapband knowledge. There are many people who are emotional eaters and regardless of what surgical intervention they have they still have the psychological problems which prevent the surgery from being a success. We will also go through a lot of emotional changes once the weight comes off, they just want to see if you're sane enough to handle it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
