What do you use for a Calcium supplement

Recommended Posts

My doctor wants me to use calcium citrate. My problem is that I don't want to take 6 of the minies but have a really hard time getting even half of one down. Anybody have a recommendation on a good supplement that is easy to get down?

I use the Viactiv calcium chews - I like the chocolate the best (tastes almost like a Tootsie Roll). Good for a sweet/chocolate fix. Each one is 500 mg. My doctor recommends 1500 mg, so I have one with each meal. I buy mine from Wal-Mart ($8.50 for 90).

My doctor told me Viactive right after surgery, but then told me to change forms. I'm going to look for some of these you've suggestee, especially the Bariatric Advantage. Thanks as always.

I know there is calcium citrate and Calcium Carbonate- THey are different but I am unsure as to the difference- I use Viactive at my physicians request- before this I was on Caltrate.

Is there a difference between Calcium supplements and calcium citrate? I bought some calcium chews at GNC ..caramel flavor. They tasted too good..too much like candy and it almost set off a big sugar craving. But they werent calcium citrate. Just calcium.

Most of the chewable like Viactiv are calcium carbonate. It is a smaller molecule so you can get more of it in a smaller form. Problem is, calcium isn't that easily absorbed. It needs to be paired with an acid. So, most nutritionists associated with weight loss surgery and the doctors suggest you take calcium citrate after you've healed from your procedure. But the things are honking huge in the amount we need. See some of the suggestions above and look for calcium threads for more, as well as some suggested choices.

Hey thanks. I did read some other posts on calcium supplements but I am still not sure I understand why one is recommended over another. Oh well. I read the ingredients on Viactiv and I'm not sure but it looked like there was trans fat in it. I may be wrong. I tried another kind from a bariatric website. Totally disgusting. Like eating chalk but worse.

Ok thanks. I will read all of the suggestions. I really cant do the ones that taste too much like candy as sweets tend to set off cravings for more sugar. So i guess it has to be somewhere between not bad and not gross.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
