Hi everyone! I am new here and am considering getting the lap band. I took the first step recently and attended a seminar at a local hospital to learn more about bariatric surgery.

I am weighing the pros and cons between the lap band and gastric bypass.

I was wondering: why did you decide to get the lap band vs. other types of surgery?

The band, at 3 years out, has comparble weight loss rates and less complications.

I didn't like the idea of being rerouted inside. The band can be removed or redone if there are issues once bypassed it's done. I feel there are fewer risk.

The main reasons why I did the lapband was because it is adjustable, the is no bypassing my insides, and the weight loss at a 3 year length is the same as a bypass patient. I have to say having the lap band was the best decision I ever made.

non evasive surgery and if need be can be reversed ie removed was my main reason. Also in Uk and as self pay it was cheaper and the long term results seem to be very similar with regards to weight loss. :)

I did not want the malabsorption that comes with the gastric bypass. When I get older I want to be able to absorb what I need (medications and such). There is a thread regarding The Gastric Sleeve surgery. This is not a malabsorption option as well. Good luck with your decision.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
