An interesting possibility...

Hello. I was reading the threads about insurance & financing when I read one bander's thread and it got me to thinking. Her insurance wouldn't cover WLS, but it would cover her hiatal hernia repair. She discussed this w/ her surgeon and he agreed to put a lap band in place while fixing her hernia for a much reduced fee. I have seen other threads posted on here that talk about having hernias repaired while also having the lap band put in place. Many people (including the surgeons) look at the procedure as WLS w/ the hernia repair "tagging along for the ride." What if it was looked upon as a hernia repair w/ WLS incorporated??? It is worth a shot for us self-payers to see if insurance companies do cover hiatal hernia repairs and then ask the surgeon if s/he would be willing to put a band in place at a reduced cost.

I didn't have a hiatal hernia. At one point it was thought I did, though. I called my insurance company and was told that if the surgeon was on my plan they would pay for the hernia repair only. They would not pay 100% of the surgical center or anesthesiologist and only whatever was considered "fair and standard" for the hernia repair itself as far as the surgeon went. As it turned out, it didn't matter. When Dr. Hart did the surgery there was absolutely no hiatal hernia.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
