Post Op Constipation - Any Ideas?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I was banded on March 25. I have not had a bowel movement since March 24th.

I'm not feeling any pain or pressure from it, but I anticipate it is only a matter of time.

Last night I managed to get in 4oz of high Fiber yogurt over the course of an hour...still nothing.

I've eaten applesauce and baby food fruit and even Decaf coffee which is one of my usual triggers.

Nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, I'm finding it almost impossible to get in enough Protein or fluids...I'm averaging 30oz of Fluid per day and maybe 20oz of Protein.< /p>

I feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day if we have to wait 2 hours after eating before drinking again.

2 hours??? that does make it nearly impossible to get enough fluids! Mine was only an hour in the beginning and is down to 30 minutes now.

Talk to your doctor but mine recommended a non-stimulant laxative to help in the beginning. I used Philips Milk of Magnesia. Just start with a tsp if that doesn't work try two tsp, the smallest dose necessary to get you going without making it too loose.

I use benefiber to ease my Constipation. The good thing about benefiber is that it doesn't have any taste and it just adds Fiber to whatever you eat or drinkk with. But definitely talk to you doctor about it first.

I suggest you contact your surgeon immediately. You may be on the way to being beyond constipated...but impacted!

Can't say I feel your pain, but I'm sorry you're suffering. Trust me, you don't want the alternative that I'm going through...6-10 "explosions" a day with belly cramps. Hope you feel better!

Thanks everyone!

My surgeon's nurse just returned my call. She recommended baby food prunes and Colace.

I'm off to the store!

Thanks again!

I use collace occasionaly, that's what my doc recommends too. Usually by the next day I'm good to "go". So to speak.

Hi,

I have the answer thanks to another "Banded" friend. "Smooth Move" yes, Smooth Move is the name it is an herbal tea. I drank 1/2 cup before bedtime and the next day relief. Not a "blow out" just relief.

Miralax works wonderfully.....Add it to your drink and you can't taste it. It is very gentle and will cause no EXPLOSIONS! (-: Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
