Burning Reflux and heartburn

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded in Jan 2007 and have lost only 5 kg in the 2 years since. I have recently had my 7th band fill and have started to experience reflux and heart burn. I have had trouble keeping foods down at times and can only cope with foods with a Soup consistency. Anybody have any suggestions as to what it could be. I would really appreciate the help.

Your band is too tight. At least, that's what we're taught. You should be able to eat SMALL bites well chewed of just about any food. If not; you're too tight. Why do you think you've only lost 5 kg (11 pounds I think) in all this time? Have you been exercising? making healthy choices? avoiding the "slider" type foods that go down easy? I think you need to maybe get some saline removed and review what you need to do to use the band; it's just a tool, doesn't sound to me like it's been working, or that you've been working it....?

but you are suffering and can hurt yourself (esophageal problems etc) if you let this go on for long.

What are "slider foods?" Ive heard the term used a couple times... thanks

Slider foods are foods that are perhaps inappropriate for weight loss (cookies, milkshakes, mashed potatoes with butter and gravy) but that "slide" through the band easily. This becomes important if someone has too much restriction or fill in the band...because then the tendency is to pick slider foods rather than the healthy ones.

Thanks for the advice RM, I will consult my doctor re taking out some saline and yes I have been living on slider consistency foods, but have tried to make good choices with these. Guess I have become disheartened by it all,nd thought the band fills would be a quick fix. Will need to start all over again and make "the tool" work for me

Good luck! It's a process, getting the fill level "just right". But when it is at the correct spot, it works marvelously! Don't give up! :tongue_smilie:

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
